I saw it a few months back and loved it. I hated that little lick ass spy nerd.

I just finished watching it and I thought it was very good.

I was curious as to whether the HIGH SCORE at the end of the film still holds to this day, so I checked Twin Galaxies.

    Have a look for yourself....

yeah liked it a lot. the trailer made it out to be some sort of geeky competition betweens two nerds, but when you watch the full film it about a lot more than that.

I was really surprised to see the current Twin Galaxies leaderboard

Really interesting read. I'm totally inspired by Steve Wiebe. :) I've been playing some DK since watching. Made it as far as the 3rd elevator stage (I think that's the 9th level), but not beyond. Yet. :D

My wife is nervous that I'll attempt a world record. HAHA. :D

Just made my brother and his girlfriend watch this and they are the furthest from videogaming geeks as you can get. Both absolutely loved it, my brothers girlfriend was saying how much she'd love to beat up Billy by the end of it :)

Yeah I got my g/f to watch it with me and she was captivated after a few mins, She plays retro stuff like Sega and Snes but wouldn't go as far back as Donkey Kong generally. She loved it.

A friends mother who has no interest in games sat down and watched it with him another time. It just has the capability of drawing people in whether they like gaming or not. A bloody fantastic documentary.

i loved it. one my favourite bits was the scorekeeper (can't remember his name, the SUPER geeky guy with glasses who resigned) talking up his job like it was the most important thing in the world

"i see world records set every day"

felt kinda sad for him actually..

i also get the impression that billy mitchell's not the uber-bastard that he's made out to be, but that's been debated to death. i always got the impression that the scene when billy comes into funspot when steve is playing, and passes him saying "there's some people here i dont want to spend too much time with" was edited, if it wasnt then there would have been no need to cut do a different angle..

after watching the movie last year i got donkey kong on mame, it's a tough bastid isn't it??

they're making a movie about it aren't they? which has potential. ben stiller as steve and will ferell (or even better, will arnett from arrested development) as billy? could be crazy enough to work...

I was paying very close attention to that scene since I read that billy mitchell interview and there definitely was multiple cameras used in that shot unlike what he claimed. You can clearly see the camera that takes the second shot in the shot where steve says hi to billy. Still there definitely was a cut so it's still debatable.

In Billys words "Absolute brutality". :D

I just got past the 3rd elevator stage for the first time there. The one with the different bouncing thingies and it prompted me to come back on here to check this thread. 58,100! WOOT! Bit of a way to go yet. :D

Exactly. I think it could have been about anything really. It's a classic "please let the nice guy triumph" film. Really well made.

There's a good article on "The King Of Kong" in this month's Retro Gamer magazine (you can get it in Easons) where Billy Mitchel give some of his side again.
The only thing i can say is that someone ain't telling the truth as a lot of things people are saying asre in conflict.....

I watched this last nite when I was bored and I was not expecting much. I thought it was going to be uber geeky but it turned out to be a very well made documentary. I watched it in my bedroom and when my girlfriend walked in, I tried to switch the channel. I think she must of thought I was watching porn! It gas, I did not want to admit i was watching a documentary on video games!

Anyways I going to get her to watch King of Kong this week, she would not be into anything techy but I think she would enjoy this. For anyone that has not watched it I would recommmend you do watch it.

The Wizard, eh ? Theres been some vague, vague traces of a film regarding computer games I used to watch when I was a kid and I think that may be it. Ill have to go looking for a copy.

So what's Billy saying in his defence other than he was mis-represented? It's hard to see how they could have made him appear so arrogant withouth their being a large element of truth to it...

Thanks, but I can't buy things online :( So overpriced copies of things in stores is the only option for me. (I'm aware everything is much cheaper online, but it's just not an option for me at the moment)

    Necro-thread! :)

Just finished watching this. Great film and amazing how 1 person pretty much controlled the scene from people just being in awe of his old records. So much so that they disbelieved that anyone could even compete with him, crazy people out there.

I don't know if it's complete coincidence but did anyone else think Billy Mitchell was exactly like Ben Stiller's character in Dodgeball?

This probably isn't the most popular view but I think Billy Mitchell is the man. He is driven, an achiever, competitive and will do what it takes to win. Of course that his chosen field of competition after Video Games is BBQ sauce is pathetic in itself but really, he is the American Dream personified is he not?

Clearly Steve Wiebe is a total gent and a stand up genuine guy but I do feel that Mitchell was misrepresented by the directors of the King of Kong.

For me it is the sycophants that hang about Mitchell, so eager to do anything to preserve his record (and thus continue living vicariously through him) that come out of the movie as the real villains and losers of the piece.

Just watched it - very good.
2 sides to the story for people wondering what was the fallout between Bill, Steve, and Seth Gordon (director)

    http://www.1up.com/news/king-kong-nemesis-talks

from wiki: Gordon has claimed to have painted Billy Mitchell as a more light-hearted character than his real life persona concerning the movie. Gordon also claims that Billy Mitchell is "so much worse than we painted him out to be," but he chose to only include scenes that were necessary to tell the story, because the movie would have been "darker" had he not played with the facts.

    Fixed that for you !

    PS,
A more realistic one is " The Kong off " where you will see they really are all friends , having fun together and cheering each other on while playing .

Sorry to bump up an old thread but I just came across this movie on recommendation of others.
I just checked out that "King of Kong". Its pretty cool. The guy Steve Wiebe seemed a nice guy. On the other hand Billy Mitchell (Who was a total pr1ck) and his drones especially thay guy Brian Kuh were douchebags.
This makes me now wanna build a Games cabinet now and play :D
