    Hi all,

Just doing my latest PC upgrade, fit an Abit AB-9 mobo, 4gb ram, 6600 quadcore processor, 8600XT gfx card, and still have my 2 sata, and 2 ide burners. Problem I'm having is that I'm trying to install vista, and getting random lock-ups during the process. I'm thinking the 350w antec psu isn't up to the task, what do ye reckon?

woah that does seem like alot pressure on your PSU. I seriously doubt its up to it! You would need atleast a 500 watt id say for a pc like that.

    hahaha.. I re-read the post...

You cant install vista on 4GBs of ram.. you need to take out 2GBs of it, install it.. Then install a patch(dont know it but you can google it) and shutdown and pop in the other two and it should be fine!

Id say your PSU is up to it.. lol

Think it could have been a BIOS problem... trying again now after eventually flashing from USB (who uses floppies nowadays!?).. what a nightmare this upgrade has become!

Are you trying it with just 2GB's of ram?

Well, it was a BIOS problem in the end lads. The abit ab8 quad GT motherboard shipped with a BIOS version that causes vista to crash on install when using a quad core processor... jeez. that was a well tested board eh? :)

So what are you doing RMA'ing it? Did you even try install vista on two gigs of ram?

You didnt answer anyone just answered your own thread?

Thats a known problem with the abit board , I had it myself on my HTPC , but managed to fix it myself without RMA'ing it. The issue is well documented on various sites , Google it and you would have had your answers.

Also, Im running Vista on all my machines now , and while it will install fine with more than two GB of ram installed ( there is no inherent problem in installing with 4GB of ram ...32 bit wont see it but it wont stop it installing ) in this case dazftw is correct , it would have worked fine if you had taken out 2GB of ram as the issue with the ABit board is memory specific.

No, I flashed the mobo to the latest BIOS and installed vista. I did try installing with 2gb and it hung, so I think the issue was with the quadcore and the bios.

Just a quick example of many and varied OS install problems with Abit motherboards , all of them are nothing to do with the OS by the way.

I got mine working , and its fine so I'll leave it alone , however I wont be buying anything else from that particular MB crowd , far far too much hassle.
