Bypassing blocked sites ...

We have some ridiculous filters/proxys here in college - and while I get new circumventors sent to me every few days (peacefire) they are blocked within a few minutes. Tech support has way too much time on their hands ;(

So, is there a way to have some sofware that can be easily installed and carried on a USB memory stick - to bypass the filters? Anything installed, saved, or downloaded is wiped when you log-out - so it would be handy enough to have on the memory stick. Stick in, load up, install, browse, logout.

There are some sites that I genuinely need for course work and research, but they're blocked for containing keywords that are recognised by the filter.

    Any thoughts?

One thought would be to use something like logmein coupled with another computer that is unrestricted at home.

Can't you go eight hours without bebo / porn ? :-)

Yeah, I was just having a look at that on wiki - the computer is always on (both parents working from home) and broadband is connected ... so I could have something running during the day. Is it much hassle to set up? I'd keep it limited to 3-4 people using it.

It's very easy to install and use.

    Foxy Proxy for Firefox: http://foxyproxy.mozdev.org/

    Relakks: www.relakks.com

    VPN Tunnel: www.vpntunnel.co.uk

    All work for me.

all of the proxys were blocked in my school but then someone came up with a new way. o.k first off go to Tool->Internet options->Connections-> LAN settings.
when your in there go to the bit that says proxy server, tick the box and then type in www.myfreeproxy.ca
Then close that down and exit out of the internet. when you go back in you'll be in a proxy site.
if it doesn't work go to the bit where you typed in www... if there is a number in the box try removeing it....i don't know if that really helps or not though

Don't forget that if one of the T&C of using their network is not to abuse it then you are risking being turffed off the network, permenantly. In a work stiuation it could be a disciplinary matter.

if you have broadband at home do some homework
or if you have a legit reason to use the network then ask the powers that to amend the rules

because of the threat of someone suing the college they have to be seen to prevent access to some sites,

Exactly. You're all going to get hairy palms anyway. Wait til you get home for pr0n, and your bebo / facebook can wait til then.

Even if you use a proxy server it still passes through the firewall and the destinations can be seen.

Not worth the trouble. Get a 3G modem if you need unrestricted access.

Good idea. OP, people have been kicked out of college, and fired from companies for bypassing proxies.

What's this got to do with 'lifehacking' anyway?

Easiest way i use is to get the ip address of the site at home and use it as the URL http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx it works for my friend in work as he has youtu*e blocked :)

    hope that works anyway

If you own a website (domain and hosting), you could just install a Proxy yourself. It's very very simple. I set my one up and it is only two pages. It uses your server as a location, if I'm correct.

Sure, just make a linux liveusb, so all you have to do is plug the usb key in before turning the computer on and make sure it boots. You can run linux off the ram (doesen't touch the hard drive) and browse the internet off whatever web browser you have installed. It is slow (because it's running off the ram) but it works.

I would recommend slax, as it's small and hast good driver support.

    Download it here; http://slax.org

and install it on your usb stick with this handy installer here; http://myslax.bonsonno.org/download.php

It isn't slow because it's running from RAM. Your OS and all programs you run load from the hard disk to the RAM to run because it's much, much faster to access RAM than a hard disk. In this case, live cd's run slow because it's loading from the CD/DVD rather than the hard disk which is much faster then a cd/dvd.

Are yee loonies ? Using a different OS won't solve anything.

If the firewall only allows port 80, then you can use a redirect script on a host as already described. If it allows outbound ssh, perhaps via a socks proxy, then use that to tunnel into a machine at home running sshd and out from there.

Either way it's not a great idea, the college facilities aren't there to be abused.

https://vtunnel.com should sort you out the HTTPS i think provides a secure connection which doesnt seem to be picked up by firewalls as such. works for me and a few mates . Of course dont abuse t&c of use ..............
