The OP asked people to suggest some. Despite that people are suggesting Peugeots, Renaults, Volvos, and before long, BMWs.

Many of the cars thus mentioned would blow a T5 into the weeds.

Considering the the nature of the forum and the context of the thread, Its doubtful that I'd be referring to a fictional space station for puppets.

What I was referring to was the Volvo T5, 850, S70, S60, etc etc.

I'm guessing here, but somehow I'd say he was joking.

I'm guessing here, but somehow I'd say your not great at picking up sarcasm.

Ok well the usefulness of the replies is starting to drop but thanks all the same!

There seems to be plenty of models out there that might suit me so I'm going to have to see which ones are best and then try to find a good example in my budget.

So far I'm thinking maybe one of:

    Skyline
    Levin
    Prelude
    Trueno
    200sx

    Big. Fast.

    another :

    http://www.cbg.ie/Cardetail.aspx?CBGID=-2&ID=988993

I drive these; nothing goes wrong except the steering pump gasket; once it's fixed it's fixed; easy to spot - if fluid leaking from under steering pump it needs a new gasket which is easy to do. There's a reason they're high mileage ... they're great cars and that engine will outlast almost all others.

Re the LS400, that's a very-expensive-to-tax 4.0L. Ultra reliable, but the suspension is woefully soft. Makes it comfy, but forget sporty.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,924 ✭✭✭trellheim

he wanted Big and Fast as I recall, anything over 3.5L is the same price.

yes it's soft .... that's the way I like it

It's not fast. It clocks in at 8.4 on the 0-60 last time I measured.

I think he is looking for a nice sporty JDM not a cruise liner on wheels ;)

With sarcasm like that, you have to be a yank... There's just no other excuse for it.

I'd drop the Levin from that list, it's fairly average at best. Also the Skyline won't fit your budget, unless you go for the 2 litre, and that's fairly crappy.
Prelude Type S would fit the bill nicely, or an S14 200SX.

and that has what to do with fast now ? that's acceleration not top speed.

I would stay away from automatics as well if you want a good drive.

    VTEC

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭cfitz

Looking at the amount of cars that fall within my price range, I think my best bet is not to pick exactly which car I want, rather wait for something that looks good to appear in my price range. There's one or two there at the moment that I need to check out whether that particular model is a good one (so I'll probably be back with more questions!).

As I said already, I wouldn't trust myself to be able to judge a well-maintained car - for this reason I generally only consider buying from a garage/dealer. If I do not consider private sales in this case I think I'll be limiting my options an awful lot. I don't know any mechanics well enough to come look at a car with me as a favour. Do people often pay mechanics to look at a car for them? Has anyone here done it before?

And top speed is all but useless unless you are fortunate enough to live in a country with no speed limits on their Motorways.

0-60 is the only fair measure of a car's performance, and even that has it's flaws.

It's indicitive. You can use acceleration every day, how often can you use top speed?

How about this for a curve ball...

    http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=872448

    Mitsubishi Galant Saloon
    2.5 V6 Elegance 7.9s 137mph 158bhp

There is the VRT to consider, and road tax to pay, but you could try an offer on it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭fuzzywiggle

Integra? dc5 if possible..prob not for that money though

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,924 ✭✭✭trellheim

the thread title is big fast jap cars ...

an LS400/430/460 ticks all the boxes .... the LS400 is cheap as chips for what you get and with 120,000 miles all you have to do is change the oil.

if you want acceleration get an old Evo or a skyline and pay the hefty insurance ... the LS400 is dirt cheap to insure.

I suggested the VR4 on the previous page. Nice and unsuspecting, and around 280 odd bhp.
Although your one would be easier to run!
