recently bought a bmw 318 and the tyres on it are 225/40/18. they seem a bit too wide for the car and the steering wheel is all over the place even when driving on a straight road.

brought it down to get wheels balanced today and the bloke said the wheels are too wide for the car so does anyone know what tyre size i should be looking for.

    thanks in advance.

Did the fitter say the wheels were too wide or just the tyres?

225/40R18 is the correct size for a 3 series in an 18 providing its not an E30. What id imagine you have is a wheel with a 5 series offset. That would make the wheels appear to be too wide for the car. The correct offset for a 3 series is 35-45 and a 5 series is 15-25. Worst case scenario is your wheels are sitting out 30mm too far. Most wheels will have the offset printed on the inside spokes

yeah thats what it is mate. when you look at the car straight on they're sticking out about that much.

is this dangerous or nothing to worry about?
the wheels are fairly new on it and im skint at the moment so i doubt they'll be changed soon.

the guy in the tyre place just said they were too big and to have them changed.

    cheers lads.

Wouldn't say dangerous but the car is not designed to have low offset wheels fitted.

If the wheels are fairly new it might be worth considering selling them and buying a new or second hand set in the correct fitment. Its possible to pick up a brand new set of 18 inch replicas for about 520 without tyres.
