    Hi All

My friend has 2000 Mitsubishi Spacestar. Car is a manual.

The problem is that when he puts the gear lever into the reverse position the car goes into 1st gear instead. You have to lift the lever and put in it into top left (for reverse) yet 1st is engaging

After many attempts it eventually goes into reverse

Anybody know what could be causing this and is there a fix

AFAIK the gearbox in the Space Star is from Renault.

Try letting the clutch out to biting point while attempting to find the gear. It's a common problem in some trucks and buses.

I drove a sierra a few years ago that way like that. The gears were just very close together, so if you didnt make sure you pushed all the way over, it would go up into 1st. Often missed first and hit 3rd too.

It goes over to the left as far as it goes as you have to pull this clip up to get it over.

Theres no problem getting it into the reverse position put for some strange reason it selects 1st gear instead

No idea what that particular gearbox looks like, but more often than not problems like you describe appear when the actual linkage (the levers and rods that transfer the movement from the gearstick to the box) is worn or misaligned. Could be something as simple as a missing/bent pin somewhere.

As you say the "lifting" doesn't engage properly any more I would suspect that the problem lies at the leverage mechanism at the gearstick end of things.

No idea what that looks like in a Mitsubishi Spacestar, but try and see if you can get the gaiter off and see the bottom of the gearstick and the mechanism there ...the problem may be easily identified and self explanatory.

Agreed. Most likely worn bushes in the gear linkeage.

If it's easy to find and get at, it could be quite cheap.

Not so, if some major dismantling has to be done
