Ahh, must try it out, haven't come across it. I'll have to break my Dooley's habit first though!

Three more places i remember I've been to..

L'Atmosphere - twas pretty nice and quite reasonable. I was a bit too adventurous though and got the snails for starter - not too keen on the texture! The duck main was very nice.

Devines - thought the decor was awful, so yuppyish, pretentious, no character, and on top of that kinda cheap. Also the lighting is so so bad, you can't properly see what you're eating, it gives everything a yellowish tone which weirdly camoflages the color of the food. That said, I had a decent enough starter (courgette tartlet thing).. I had chiken fajita for main, not great, very bland, the green dip on the side I figure was supposed to be guacamole, but tasted like it was right out of a jar. Food is quite cheap here, but there's a reason for it!

I had lunch at Gino's recently.. Decent pizzas, fab icecream!

Will deffo try out La Taverna, sounds good!

Does anyone have any feedback on Sabai? I used to love Tuk Tuk Thai, and it seems the menu is pretty similar (http://www.sabai.ie/menu).

I really liked Tuk Tuk Thai but 3 of us went to Sabai and it was so disappointing, pretty poor all round, no comparisson in the quality or presentation with Tuk Tuk Thai. The 3 of us wont be going back.

I had no intention of going out tonight for something to eat, but having read the review above about La Taverna, I decided it was worth a try.

New small Italian place beside City Square, a few doors up from Secrets.

Yep, fantastic place - it's owned/run by the same chap that has Harlequins up on Patrick St, service & food is always fantastic, and never the priciest either.

I tried that place in Arundle Square a few weeks back - Ye know the place by the Burger King entrance to City Square?

I gotta say, I thought it was dreadful. Service was... pretty much at it's barest, no conversation or anything from the staff, it gave a bit of an attitude of "In, cheque please, out"... which is never really what you want.

Food was dry, overcooked, and lacking in a bit of flavour - I'd have gotten a better burger and chip in any chipper in town for half the price, beer wasn't exactly chilled and served in a mineral glass (Yes, I'm very picky about that kind of thing). We didn't stick around for coffee.

I was suprised the place was so busy.

    Was that The Brasserie ?

That place has really gone down in standards. As recently as Spraoi it was fantastic, great service, even better food but was in there about four weeks ago, ordered the lasagne and I reckon there was more taste and flavour on the napkins. Asked for some ketchup so I could a least taste something and was given a small bowl that was obviously left out for too long as the there was a thick hard layer on top of the sauce.

    Never again.

Hi I was enquiring earlier this week re Tuk Tuk Thai/Sabai. Finally got to the bottom of it, Tuk Tuk Thai is totally closed now and Sabai is the only restaurant. We went there for lunch this week and all 5 of us really loved our dish. Service was good and only down side I guess is food was a bit slow to arrive for a lunch time. There was only two tables there and it still took 25 minutes after we ordered to get the food. We still made it back to work on time though. I liked the setting/decor too.

We all thought we'd definitely go back again. I personally can't compare to Tuk Tuk Thai quality as the last time I ate there was a few years ago. But my colleague who was a fan of Tuk Tuk Thai and was hoping to go there that day still was very happy with Sabai.

    Hope this helps!

    Yep, that'd be the one.

Tbh, I think we got the same bowl of ketchup as you.

If your going into City Square via the Petermark / River Island entrance, it's just across the road on your left hand side, can't miss it :)

Worst place in Waterford by a mile is that kip in The Forum....Devine?
Useless Staff, bland food, crap venue.... 1/10

    and finally
Devines - Food is quite cheap here, but there's a reason for it!

to avoid it like the plauge?

I have to organisae a family birthday/meal/p**s up for nearly 20 of us in jan and was looking for somewhere with a bit of space (Unlike say Bodega). I thought that forum would have loads of space but if the food/service is muck i'll cross it off my list. that whole nightclub staff working in a restarunt is weird, in my experience nightclub staff are pretty bad at pulling pints, I cna only shudder to think what its like there

Anyone recommend anywhere with enough space for that siize group? Looking to avoid chinese/thai/specialist menus as someone in the group wont like it.

Has anyone tried the atheanum house hotel of late? or the new Chez Ks?

The Mill,Kilmacow on the Dublin Rd you turn in off the main rd at Irish's pub. you will get quality service and fantastic food at a decent price, the chef is the owner so any special requirements will be looked after.

Was in espresso last nite and from start to finish it was excellent and very reasonable.

Went to La Taverna on Sunday with a party of seven.

Excellent food, really fresh ingredients, very enjoyable.

Their house wines are both excellent and very reasonably priced.

In fact the whole bill was very reasonable.

We sat upstairs, and while the lighting and seating is not as atmospheric and polished as some, the food and wine more than make up for it.

    Good, friendly service.

They have the stone oven working in there, and I can confirm that the pizza is indeed, something to experience.

Only small gripe one could have would be the time between courses. Not something that would bother me, as I normally go for a meal for a good banter etc. and I would much rather the food was prepared as well as this, than arrive quickly.

Highly recommended if you like Italian style cooking.

Have you tried the new one on the prom? Verrrry nice. Often pretty busy. Cant
think of the name of it.

massemo's , it used to be the beach grill, its now owned by the former owner of tony's.

Had lunch at La Taverna on Sunday, just a slice of pizza but twas very nice. The sign outside says they have seating for 30 upstairs, so maybe might accommodate a party of 20 pretty comfortably.

    Hi,

I just booked a table for myself and the missus for valentines day at Waterford Castle, Munster Room. (I know its only Jan, but because its landing on a Saturday I figured book now!)

I was wondering if anybody has been there before, what its like and what I would be expecting to be forking out for a rosemantic meal for 2 :)
(not that cost is an issue what it comes to my beautiful lady....... but be nice to get a head up ;) )

    Thanks,
    DG.

Just bring a couple of credit cards and a wad of cash.

  • Registered Users Posts: 385 ✭✭DanGlee

yeah, am expecting something in the region of €150 (no bottle of wine as missus is preggers) hope its worth it though, she needs a nice night out for carrying my off-spring for the past 6 months :)

Dinner at the Castle is about 65.00 each + a 10% service charge. The food is exceptionally good, some of the best eating you can have this reagion for sure and ,at times, as good as anything you will get anywhere. Dinner is taken in a vast oak panelled dining room that is just beautiful, and resident pianist Bernie Flanagan will be there tinkling the ivories. There are multipile courses and it isn't itsy bitsy stuff so have a good appetitie going and allow time to linger over the evening - it really is food to be savoured. If there is one weak point with the Castle it is probably the wine menu which can be a bit overwhelming in size but that won't be an issue for you. We have gone there about twice a year for the last few years and never have left other than glowing with satisfaction.

  • Registered Users Posts: 385 ✭✭DanGlee

thanks durrus... thats what I wanted to hear... €65 aint cheap, but an average restaurant in town is usually 120+ with wine, so I shouldn't be too shocked when the bill arrives.

I assume they take laser out on the Island?

Also, one more thing... I read on the website that men are urged to wear a jacket when dining in the munster room... whats all that about? I prefer not, but I don't mind putting on a pair of trousers and a shirt at best... I don't do suits, ties etc unless its for a wedding/funeral/interview :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 269 ✭✭m3llowship

It does have a dress code.

They do have a rack of Ajckets and ties, but lets be honest no one wants to wear that do they#?

If ya have a nice jacket and a shirt you'll be fine.

Its all a bit of unnecessary fuss to be honest, but it saves you the hassle of wearing a dusty old jacket

  • Registered Users Posts: 385 ✭✭DanGlee

So I will defo have to have to fish out my jacket... boo

    thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 90 ✭✭durrus

The dress code has been relaxed - no more jacket and tie obligation - just no denims and no trainers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 385 ✭✭DanGlee

Oh that grand. I can handle trousers, shirt and shoes! :)

I don't even wear the dress code to work, which is smart business casual... ah, cords, jumper and brown trainers do the job ;) stick it to management hey!
