I'm just wondering is there any product/way to stop soot coming through paint. The soot is on an chimney brest that has not been in use for years, so its old soot.

Today I have tried to seal it in completly with a neat coat of pva, so I'll see how that goes with the paint tomorrow.

    Anyone suceed with this problem?

Zinnser Bin , which is a white pigmented shellac. It will stop most substances 'bleeding' through. MRCB sell it.

    Hi artieanna
MRCB are a paint shop in Dublin,Cornmarket, up near Christchurch. Bin is not cheap about €50 a gallon, but you can also buy it in quarts. Im sure if you called them, they could advise if there were suppliers out your way.
Bin is used a lot where there is smoke damage, in renovation/redecoration jobs.
