    Question for you 4th years...

When you completed 3rd year, you got your ordinary degree, no probs...
Now you're in 4th year and if you pass, you get your honours degree, no probs...

Question is, is it possible to take a year out between 3rd and 4th year? ie. Get ordinary degree, travel for a year and then come back to complete 4th year and get honours degree?

Technically aren't you supposed to have a reason for taking a year out , but I cant see why it would a problem , know a few lads who've done it this way

You should check with the college but it should not be a problem, you have completed an award and a year later you are comming back to do another course. It is when during a course you want to take a year out you need permission.

Yes sir, it is most definitely possible. I took two years out between third and fourth year to travel (2005 - 2007 total). All I had to do was state that I was taking a year out and then reiterate that fact when form-signing time came around again in 2006. It wasn't difficult at all in my experience.

    Hope this helps. :)

It was the Ordinary Degree in Computing. There were no such things as specialised course streams in my day!

Matters were slightly more complicated than they would have been as the course was done away with after the 05/06 academic year in favour of a modularised course (software stream, networks stream, etc). All I had to do was check up with a couple of lecturers in the BSc year that I could still enter the course with no problems. Sure enough, I got the green light to continue on my travels until I was ready to come back.

Just a word of warning, although it may not even be relevant anymore.

In 2001 my mate successfully completed his Diploma in Computing with a Mer2 (Ratings: Distinction, Mer1, Mer2, Pass,Fail). The requirement for getting into the Degree year was a Mer2 or better. He decided to take a year out. But when he got back and wanted to do his degree they now said he'd need a Mer1 or distinction at least. So they wouldn't let him in. He ended up going to Castlebar instead to do his final year.

I don't know if anything like this still applies, but check it out...

I'll ask the head of the dept. if I actually do decide to take a year out. I reckon i'll just go straight into 4th year and get it over with
