I've changed my mind about Dude. My lecturer used it yesterday. It sounded very very wrong.

I've never ever note even once, witnessed someone using the word "dude" on boards other than me.

Unless I'm just not looking hard enough.
    Sweet.

I remember "dude" becoming popular in the late 80s/early 90s - around the time of Bill & Ted, Wayne's World, "grunge", Beavis & Butthead etc. It's not a new thing.
I say it alot. I don't like the "k" thing in text though: "K I was in a restaurant in Stephen's Green and guess who I bumped into?" etc.

Isn't it just something that tele-agents in call centres say?

I picked it up in the early 90's while overdosing on Beavis and Butthead. It stuck.

Mike Judge created many of his characters through his experiences in Dallas, Texas. Here..uh..THERE, the word is used often. Mostly the youngins call each other dude. I do it out of habit from when I WAS young...The older folk use it more derogatorily, or as a statement of surprise or disappointment.

"Check out this dude walkin' like he ain't all hat and no cattle"

    Or

"The bartender says ain't no taquila left, and the mexkins et all tha nachos."
    "Dude..."

WYK - some dude from Texas

    Erm ...

It's when ... when ... you are a Norweigian sailor and you're going to say Fjord. But you suddenly sneeze and instead it comes out Fnord! There we are. Hope that clears things up.
