Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What ever happened to the girl who co:presented talking history? She seemed to be on a few shows then disappeared and came then disappeared again

Did she do that show really? Her name is Lindsey Earner Byrne. I had her as a lecturer - really nice and incredibly interesting lady.

Did the technology expert say there wasn't enough high definition bluray content out there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,090 ✭✭✭RadioRetro

I think he said as far as he was concerned there wasn't enough good stuff for him to buy a BluRay player. I thought it a bit strange too.

Yes. She used to be a co-presenter of Talking History until a couple of years ago. I think she had a kid and maybe that's why she doesn't present any more. She does sometimes show up as a contributor and is introduced as being a former presenter of the programme.

well tbh, I've been through a few stores recently and the Blue Ray section seems to be VERY small in most, and has limited choice... I'd be disappointed if I had bought the (more expensive) Blu Ray machine and found it was so weakly supported..

Anyone get tickets for the Off the Ball roadshow? They said they'd notify people by phone call.

Talking about trolls on George Hook at the minute

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,630 ✭✭✭steelcityblues

Read on another forum that Hook said he would not talk about Ron Paul, because he was an 'irrelevance'.

How does a guy who spent most of his adult life as a rugby coach suddenly proclaim himself an authority on US candidates?

    Overpaid moron.

Caught the very end. Twitter sounds like a thoroughly nasty place.
I hope there will be a podcast..

You have to hand it to Hook. Before your segment He openly admitted to being biased but then went on to say that all other broadcasters/media types have to be fair and unbiased.

I hope you enjoyed your time on the O'BrianTalk Channel.

Dont normally listen to coleman at large but the trade union guy tonight is making my blood boil. Typical union attitude of anyone employing people is creaming in cash and living the high life while ripping off the worker.

Listened to it on the podcast, he was talking to our boss;), founder of this site John Breslin? and Eddie Hobbs.I nearly split my sides laughing at the twitter person who called Eddie "a loud mouthed Cork w****r"!:D

In fairness, Hook knows a fair bit about American politics, he lived in America for some time
In fairness (2).... Ron Paul is an irrelevance, I doubt he'll win even one caucus/primary next year.

    (1) He lived in America in the 80s - things are different now.

    (2) Paul is usually in the top half of canidates in polls taken. By Hook's logic, the likes of Santorum, Johnson and Huntsman would also be irrelevant. Anyway, a broadcaster should not pick and choose which candidates he/she talks about.

I wouldn't go near a high street shop for a Bluray, limited choice as you say and over priced.

Communicorp are getting as bad as RTE in interviewing everyone who happens to be working in their building.

    Murphy's good though.

Shane Coleman is hosting the Sunday show this morning and is way out of his depth asking easy questions with on real level of analysis. Leo Varadkar is on with a panel of nobodies who are clearly inexperienced at speaking on national Radio as they mumble and stumble and pray Shane wont come to them. Leo is wiping the floor with the lot of them and is even laughing at times. Meanwhile downstairs on todayfm they have skipped the whole economy thing and are already on to the euro 2012 draw. Its like listening to Fine Gael fm. Nothing to see here. Your lives are all excellent.

That Murphy guy is just pulling on the green jersey. Waste of my Sunday listening to him. Charles Moore was good on Finucanne's show today. Added a bit of intelectual ballast to these shows which has been severly lacking with the usual wafflers.

Their newsreaders always say...."the Gardai have now upgaded it to a murder investigation". For God's sake, planes, trains and (rental) automobiles, maybe hotels rooms too, are where we get upgrades and not suspicious deaths.

They should phrase it with 'elevated' or simply 'now confirmed to be'.

But then again, it is tabloid news.

Always thought this thread was an odd one. Seems like well over half the posts concern the breakfast show. Is these a dedicated breakfast show thread? If so, why does no one use it?

I've been guilty of this myself. Got a comment about Ivan, stick it in the newstalk megathread. Its just habit at this stage...

Yep, Paulo is great fun on Thursday with Moncrieff. My favourite part of the week along with Movies & Booze. He should have a full hour on the show.

I like Paolo and I download the podcast every week. He is a bit of a chancer though and knows feck all about food, bluffs his way through the show but entertaining all the same :)

Why are Newstalk so obsessed with doing outside broadcasts?? It's sheer penance for the listeners. Trying to listen to George Hook's show right now is like trying to make sense of a conversation in a crowded pub. The same thing happens when Movies & Booze goes wandering around the country. There's a reason why they build nice soundproof radio studios. It would appear that the Newstalk people haven't figured this out yet.

Disagree, I think it helps build a bit of excitement, especially around sporting events such as the rugger match in Galway.

One thing I've noticed recently is that George seems to be a lot more cranky these days. I like him but he needs to take a chill pill when dealing with fellow presenters.

100% agree, i find the Off the Ball roadshows dreadful with the clinking glasses and murmur in the background, which rises to full on coversations with intermittent "sssshhhh's" as the pints flow.

I gave up listening to Off The Ball when they're doing their outside broadcasts for that very reason. As the night goes on, the crowd get rowdier and it's impossible to hear what's being said.

well to paraphrase that russian bloke in armageddon.

"fianna fail. fine gael, ALL funded by businessmen ! "

    honestly .

can you tell the difference between who's in power now and last year ?

least ivan had the guts to say the budget when it came to property was one FF would do.

in that light shane fits right in.

wait till you see the onslaught we get now were getting another referendum.

    :)

Anyone able to identify the people quoted at the stat of Off the Ball?

Roy Keane's in there...think that's the only one I know.

    Some boxer guy...

Paul Kimmage is the one who's talking "bollocks".

Robbie Savage is the one who's talking about a modern day manager not having a mobile phone.

I think Brian Kerr is the one who's talking about an "honest answer".

Paul Gascoigne is talking about not having had a bad start to the game.

I went into town to see that programme, and even there, sitting less than 10 feet away from Hookie, I couldn't hear a word he was saying.

Robbie Savage is the one who's talking about a modern day manager not having a mobile phone.

The reply "Why should he?", sounds like it might be Jack Charlton.

Though I'm not sure if its part of the same conversation (with Savage), or edited in for comic effect.

Works brilliantly if the latter is the case.

The "Why should he" reply is Leighton James. It's at about the 4.30 mark here:

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and specifically registered to comment on Shane Coleman.

He's everywhere on NT - on the morning show, I've heard him at lunchtime, standing in for Hook and on Sundayt. I don't understand how someone who was only a print journalist until recently is handed all this (mainly) solo broadcasting! There's a real dumbing down recently.

I've plenty of other NT rants but will post later:)

I reckon he's got a sleeping bag in Newstalk House. If he's not doing the Hook Show, he's doing The Sunday Show show. If he's not doing that, he's doing the Luchtime show or the morning show. Give it time and he'll be filling in for Ken on Off The Ball and Shenanigans with Síle Seoige.

    i cant stand him TBH.

DEEPLY politically biased and prone to make sweeping comments he cant stand over.

but then considering thats the norm for so many NT presenters the fact he falls on the FF side of things means they probably see it as balance.

its getting to the stage where i cant listen to the station anymore and i DREAD to think what shyte were going to get off them when this referendum comes along.

they embarrased themselve big time with lisbon so i reckon thats the standard to expect.
