Heard the breakfast show this morning for the first time since Nora 40 Jobs was announced as Ivan 40 pensions' permanent replacement. OH DEAR GOD!! The two of them haven't a clue. There is no depth to the show at all. Every 30 minutes they run through the same routine of Chris asking Nora her opinion on X as if she was an expert on the subject. I tuned over to Morning Ireland and Aine Lalor (I think) was ripping into Eamon Gilmore. Is there no newspaper journalist that could have been appointed.

I only heard the post 9 am slot - the panel finally got to speak at 12 minutes past the hour. It was notable just how much filler, fluff and repetitious waffle there was. Its been apparent for a long time on Breakfast but seems to be getting worse.

Listening to the lunch time show Rurai Quinn just justified Labour going to the five star Carton House by saying "Nothing is too good for the working man". The only people working in that hotel this week are the staff serving the Ministeral dinner and turning out the ministeral beds.

Sile Seoige is barely in control of a sleepy Saturday morning show, Lord alone knows how she'd cope with the relative pace of Breakfast.

agreed, herself and her sister struggle when they have to go off-script.

i just find myself switching off the radio on the way to work.

I tried to give the Breakfast Show a go this morning and just had to turn off when Norah asked people to text in if drivers alongside them were on their phones while driving. FFS...

She does sound a bit amateurish to be fair. She did a lot better the first time around,I wouldn't be too critical I suppose, give her a chance to warm her seat.

I'd say the barmen are working quite hard too.

    Norah Casey this morning on:

    - 3 students pictured in the paper "Sure they're all girls cos women are smarter"
    - Texting and driving "They must be women cos men can't multitask"
    - Amanda Brunker posing for playboy "She's a very smart business woman"
    - Domestic violence "snigger snigger "She asked for it" snigger again"

Oops - that last bit is my mistake. It was Roger Moore who was the domestic violence bit, so should read "He asked for it, snigger snigger."

Yesterday they also wanted people to text in when they saw someone on the phone while driving. Cutting edge current affairs right there.

Are you serious on the last bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭Bits_n_Bobs

More or less. I think she backtracked furiously saying her comment had been based on an interview with Roger Moore - I think he said he had been the subject of domestic violence in his first two marriages and was not sure whether it was because he was difficult to live with or the his wives were "fiesty".

I was utterly appalled at her flippant attitude. If Roger Moore wants to make light of it in an interview that's entirely his prerogative - it is not appropriate for someone on the national airwaves to snigger there way through such a story and she did apologise following a few texts they received in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,577 ✭✭✭Heroditas

Sounds like she deserves a slap! :pac:

EDIT: also, was it not Rosanna Davison who posed for Playboy. Bar being a "model", what sort of businesses has she dabbled in?

Didn't hear that but was amused to catch her saying that she'd never heard of the phrase 'coping classes'.....she can't have listened to NT much then

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 374 ✭✭theholyghost

I find it odd that NT insists on hiring RADIO presenters who are not natural/comfortable speakers. Bobby Kerr, Chris Donoghue, Mick Clifford...

There is a lot to be said for the RTE/BBC school of radio announcers.

I will say this much for Tom Dunne, he seems 100% natural and comfortable on the radio. Most of NT these days seems to be non-presenters struggling through each and every sentence.

i'm not sure what the craic is with all of ivan's successors trying to keep up with the whole slaggin match with chris thing...its pathetic. "banter" me hole. chris donoghue said something like good morning to her the other day and she goes "the stink of aftershave in here"...not sure where it fit in to the banter side of things. just seemed like a beeeeeeatch.

anyway, nora whatever her name is, i've been fortunate enough to have avoided her til now on the airwaves...i really dont know how else to put it or be more articulate, she just comes across as being a complete c*nt of a person, sorry but dunno how else to put it.

nail in coffin for newstalk for me.

By having a swipe at males she's only exposing insecurities about her own standing in the corporate world. She may think its only a bit of craic but can you imagine if Chris started to list off female stereotypes. Sexism can swing both ways Norah.

They should give Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain a run with CD during mid-term - then we'd see how he copes with pressure.

Lol, have you already forgotten what Yates got up to during his tenure? Sure, this is all he did every morning.

Between slagging the wife and women drivers, he had driven the female listenership mad including my wife who refused to listen while he was on.

I was just listening to OTB and heard an ad where someone was declaring that Newstalk is a "business focused station", wtf is that supposed to mean. It's just some meaningless bull**** the CEO dreamt up, as a result Norah Casey and Bobby Kerr has been inflicted on us just because they were on Dragon's Den.

There's a little more to it than that ... Denis O'Brien and a Sean Gallagher-esque business men are the real national heroes thing.

I hate this double jobbing crap on Newstalk and TV3 (and RTE where it is endemic)

I don't want to listen to Bobby Kerr or Norak Casey. I'd rather hear some up and coming talent instead of bloated fat cats.

I don't think it's meaningless bullsh*t. Sure they're always are having business jerks presenting their shows and ISME f*ckers on being interviewed.

They love a bit of small and medium enterprises up in there.

I suspect it is largely about the CEO trying to ingratiate himself with the stations largest shareholder.

But to what end? Newstalk's goal is to increase market share to a point where it can finally make a profit. Does hiring some token business people as presenters and a pretty rubbish slogan help in anyway to achieve this? I can't see how. In fact, I predict that Norah Casey is not going to be a big hit JNLR wise and I doubt Bobby Kerr's listenership figure's are that great either. So it's all a bit counterproductive.

Tuned into Norah Casey this morning. She seemed mainly interested in the rubbish tat celeb stories. Is this a woman thing or what?

Bobby Kerr probably the worst thing I've ever heard on radio, even worse than Ray Foley. He tries to talk about marketing as if it's relevant or exciting.

His attempts to justify not passing on the VAT drop last year were a disgrace and he should have been slung out on the street for using his Newstalk show as a soapbox for that argument.

Unfortunately, Yates got worse as time went on. Half the time he was on slagging autopilot. The other half reading out newspaper headlines. He hardly got stuck in at all. Which is where you might have expected him to really score.

But since Yates, the BB has got worse too. And now since Casey it's absolutely unlistenable.

You know what I learnt only this morning, mike? Its plain Chris Donoghue, not an "O" in sight. Been making the same mistake myself all this time...

Was also impressed by his performance this morning, he really went off on one. I'd say he pissed off plenty of public sector workers this morning with those numerous rants. :D

Less impressive is his persistence in saying "we have a lot to get through today..." at 7am every morning, no matter if its a slow news day or not.

I'm with you - I've got rid of Newstalk on my car, bedside and kitchen radios plus my Android & desktop. So one sided, amateurish and up-their-own asses.
Not very entertaining to me so - as one of their presenters might say - I'm out.

I listened to Dublin City FM and Spin 103.8 in the car today.
Good God!!!! That's how bad it is. :(

Since I've stopped listening to breakfast I find myself not tuning in at all until OTB in the evening. Just goes to show how important the early morning slot is, if its turning people away in their droves they might not listen again for the rest of the day.

Heard some of that Doctor after the 9am news talking bout the labour party and Roisin "all mouth & no guts" shortall. Breakfast seems to be getting a bit in to "telling it like it is" the last 2 days. About time they stop pussy footing round the pen pushers and labour party

Yeah, if there's something newstalk really needs, it's less balance and more opinions disguised as facts.

Speaking of facts, another fine example from Early last night when interviewing Gary Pallister re galatasaray in 1993. Going on about how hard United found it to adjust after the English clubs heysel ban and this being the prime example. United won the Cup Winners Cup 1st season after the ban ffs.

I think his point was more related to winning the european cup proper. At the time, the cup winners cup was the lesser of the european cups. For example, to get to the final of the cup winners cup United had to beat the sum total of 4 teams (Pécsi Mecsek, Wrexham, Montpellier and Legia Warsaw).

    oh FFS.

ANOTHER alco bashing item on newstalk.

i'd love to ask these media and medical heads one question.

do we really have a problem with alcohol or do YOU ?

cause last time i checked the majority of us are quite happy with our relationship with alcohol, whilst the main moaners are the professional classes.

im fecking pissed off with this lecturing shyte now and im turning off.half this country wouldnt BE here if it wasnt for alcohol.

This is absolutely true. The problem as far as I can see is that people in positions of power seem to think we can prohibit our way to a solution. I'm certain the answer lies in education, a change in culture and attitude towards drink. Every major life event is associated with alcohol in this country from the christening, to the confirmation, birthdays, junior cert, leaving cert, Debs, Graduation and beyond. Everything seems to be an excuse for drinking. Is it any wonder people have an attachment to alcohol by the time they are adults if thats all they have seen from a young age? Until the culture changes, people who want to drink to excess will find a way to.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

and thats NOT going to happen because drinking is a major part of our culture

TBH Im starting to think this stuff is bordering on the anti irish now as its demonising a lifestyle the vast majority of us happily choose from a hectoring minority of busybodies and vested intersts.

once again the ONLY solution put forward is price fixing.

and the ONLY guy to say it wouldnt work was the alcoholic !

mark my words if through some miracle they actually got alcohol banned or restricted the feckers will be going on about how many burgers we eat now , or choclolate consumption and its relationship to diabetes.

and the only real winners ?

    smugglers.

    just like with the ciggies.

ive been hearing this crap for 40yrs now and i fully expect to hear it again in 40 years time (if im still knocking about)

    OH FFS !

NOW , on cue, theyre on about fat bastards !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,071 ✭✭✭✭neris

Im fed up with the publicans more then the doctors. Yeah we drink a good bit but the fact that pubs are so expensive and unsocial has a lot to do with it. Go on a night out 5 quid for a pint and you cant have a proper conversation with your mates coz theres either football on the tv or music blaring out so your shouting into each others ears. The vinters have a massive lobby to get at the government to close off license and shop sales at 10pm and now pushing through minimum pricing so why cant they turn that onto the drinks companies for cheaper kegs, bottles, spirits and soft drinks. Minimum pricing isnt going to have people running to the pubs coz they cant get a can of booze for a euro they,ll just 12 cans for 24 euro rather then 24 for 24 euro. The nanny state is really getting above its station. agree they,ll ban booze then it,ll be burgers and other food to protect the farmers then they,ll probably ban us breathing coz of the unhealthy air

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,391 ✭✭✭✭mikom

Newstalk commentator: " The problem is we have normalised drinking in this country."

    Ah, so that's it.
I see you have a nice tan Mr. commentator............ been on holidays to Italy or Spain recently.............. see any local families dining.........

Sorry, where was I........ oh yes, more prohibition...... that works.......... oh, and penalise the responsible drinkers as well by raising the price for all.

So you think that just because drinking (to excess) is part of our culture, we shouldnt try to change our habits and adopt a more sensible relationship with alcohol? To put your example into context, are you suggesting that just because "it was part of our culture" we should have just continued to accept that gardai pretty much ignored that people had a few and drove home? To make it clear, I am not for one minute suggesting alcohol should be outlawed or opening hours for pubs/clubs to be cut back, I'm simply suggesting that many peoples relationship with alcohol, cultural or otherwise, is unhealthy and in many cases dangerous.
