I've heard that it's actually a great book! Wouldn't mind a copy myself!

Good God do I need that book!

Not really - petrol/diesel in car
    oil in engine
    air in tyres
    key in ignition
    water for wipers
Mobile top-up for AA - sorted

just waste of money for book - you wont end up reading it - EVER (if you are honest)

Is that the book with lots of pictures and the woman trying to change the wheel in her high heels? It looked ok but to be honest just sit down with someone who knows a bit about car and they'll give you the same info in 5 minutes. It might make a good joke gift for someone who's completely clueless about cars!

Any starter / novice guide should do the trick...can't imagine them being overly complex? :)

I had my dad take a whole day and go through every part of the car - we changed two tires, fixed a broken windshield wiper, changed the oil, learnt what every part of the engine was called and learned how to jump start and push start the car -that pretty much covered everything I needed to know, honestly anything more serious and I'd be taking the car to the garage and letting professionals do it.

I picked up auto repair for dummies to have in the car if I'm ever stuck and need a quick reference check. Had a quick flick through The Essential Guide to Car Care for Girls in the shop and honestly content wise they looked about the same [thou dummies covered alot more as its 600 pages and the other only 70]

jaysis, i read mine and i thought i was great, and it gave me some good advice about dealing with the garage.

the only problem i have is the girl dressed like a porn star and doing all the provocative porn positions

i dont have anyone to teach me a thing about cars, i am very much on my own. this book was short concise and to the point, i finally know how to check the air pressure in my tyres which is something i have being asking people to show me for the last two years.

Autor repair for dummies is double the price but at 600 pages vs 70 pages I thought it was the better deal but I'm a big fan of those dummies books, their photoshop and flash books are great for quick reference.

i did get the essential car guide for a friend of mine as a chrismtmas preseent, everyone got a good giggle out of it and hopefully he'll have some useful advice.

it's not the most exhaustive book on the subject but it's not bad for a total n00b and to be honest, there are very few ppl left who can do a more maintenance than you'll find in that book at home.

The staff in the petrol station wouldn't teach you how to use the guage?

What was the good advice for buying cars?

I can almost hear the strain of certain posters trying desperately not to say what they want to say about this book in light of recent LL discussions :D

My sister got me that for Xmas.. Haven't opened it yet.. Hence the fact my wiper fluid has been empty for the past while, I've taken to pouring water out the driver window and just putting the wipers on :o the shame..

It won't be embarrassment you'll feel if you cause an accident because some lorry throws up gallons of muck on your windows, and you can't clear it!

Why not just get the Halfords guide to the car you actually own?

Far more useful than a generic guide because it'll show you how to do everything on *your* car which should make it far easier.

xzanti, I'd be fairly sure the manual that came with your car should have an indicative diagram to show you where to add water. If not, it's usually fairly clearly marked under the bonnet by a blue plastic lid with a wiper diagram on it.

I got this as a p8ss take for crimbo - not a whole lot in it. I keep it in the glove box incase i need to refer to it. Although whats in it can be quite helpful but if you want to know the whole in's and outs of a car, i suggest a different one.

isn't knowing where the water for the wipers goes part of the driving test?

Methinks that having a lad closeby who's mechanically inclined might be a more interesting read?
