Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

lol @ Sky Sports News reading the emails.

'looks like the English have picked the wrong Italian' and 'Forget qaulifying we are going to win the world cup' - no negative comments at all apparently.

Well, press call is for 4:30 today at FAI HQ. The power of the picket!

Good piece in the Mail yesterday. They were saying that Ireland should go and get O' Hara from Spurs.

I am honestly delighted. It does not mean we will qualify for sure, but at least we will have some stability. Could Trappa be the man to turn us into Poland or dare I say Greece?

Couldnt really have given a ****e tbh. Glad we got someone decent. But i think Venables "could" have done a job. Dont really reckon international management is rocket science.

Finally a decent Ireland manager who may be able to whip this decent set of players into shape. I just hope the expectancy levels don't go through the roof after this appointment.

    Yay for El Trap!!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,263 ✭✭✭yom 1

They may have stumbled upon him, they may not, but it is the first time in as long as I can remember that we can say the FAI have done something right for Irish Football.

    Delighted with the appointment.

Its time for the team to stand up and be counted. No more excuses.

Hopefully his first job involves handing Dunne the armband.

Hes approaching 70 and doesnt even speak English :(

Although his record is 1000000% better than the rest of the pretenders and will hopefully be one of the best things to ever happen in Irish football.

Saw his big rant as manager of Bayern last nite :D

    Untrue.

He spoke English to an irish journo at a press conference in Salzburg today.

I could understand him perfectly well.

    TRAP OUT!!!

    Better than Capello Des?
    Let's wait and see.

Capello has better players at his disposal.

    Trapattoni is respected by Capello.

    Who knows.

    We'll see.

If Capello finsihes first in the group, but Trapattoni gets Ireland to at least a play off, then I'd say Trapattoni is better, yeah.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Could we get O'Hara? He's a fantastic player imo, he's got real potential. He's played U16, U17, U18 for England though.

He was called up for the English U21's a while back, but he didn't play. If we could get him that'd be amazing.

Good piece in the Mail yesterday.

    Is that possible:rolleyes:

Of all the names bandied about I think they got the right man

Dare I say well done FAI

    lol

I've never heard Capello speaking English afaik.

I just heard Gio speaking it, so in my experience, yeah, Gio is better at English.

as Dunphy said this is the right appointment. not so much well done to the FAI but thanks for finally doing the right thing.

We need Dunne as captain, Ireland in the team, Finnan back, Duff performing and if we could get O'Hara that would be fantastic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,103 ✭✭✭estebancambias

James McCarthy perhaps making the step up? He will be 18 just after the qualification starts. He said he would leave Hamilton once they get promoted, they are running away with the league.

    Spare a thought for Stan.

So, Ireland's first "foreign" manager appointed. Trapattoni has a better CV than any others we have had in the past, thats for sure, but whether that will translate into Ireland doing better than they would have donw with someone else only time will tell. I'll reserve my judgement on him until I see some of the performances and the results.

One thing I did notice about his CV, and that is that he changes clubs/jobs every couple of years. I'd be surprised he stayed here for more than the "2 years", but we'll see. If we do manage to qualify and do well, maybe the Irish hospitatlity and 'adolation' will rub off on him and make him stay. If we dont qualify, I expect him to be off.

    Lets see what happens ....

we have given an old manager a nice cushy retirement job. still tho, good to have him aboard as hes probably the best we could have gotten

Capello is the better manager tho... unless u turn on your patriot blinkers

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 8,632 ✭✭✭darkman2

    lol @ BBC
The Republic's World Cup qualifying draw means that Trapattoni will have the task of plotting his own country's downfall.

Italy will be at home to the Republic on April Fool's Day in 2009 :D

We need to get the likes of Whelan, Garvan and O Dea more involved in the senior squads. Also what happened to Paddy McCarthy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,772 ✭✭✭jameshayes

He's the best we could have got - by far.

But hopfully people wont have an opinion of him after the first game.

Playing regularly for Charlton. Probably not gonna be international standard though.

    No more mercenaries please.

He turned out to be a solid championship / league one centre half but miles off international standard.

Just heard him there on the radio saying that he has no problem asking his old friend Arsene Wenger to release Liam Brady to be part of his management team.

I'm really optimistic about the appointment of Trapattoni.
