Hey I'm lookin to buy a roadie, ive got a Trek 7.1fx at the mo but its a little on the heavy side and i wanna do more cycling. I was lookin at the Trek 1000 and the specialisized allez and i was wondering how people felt about these two bikes? Ive around 700 to spend so any recommendations of other bikes would also be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    Ben.

Bikes are pretty similar spec, buy whatever is the cheapest and in your size.

i use a trek 1000 as my winter bike its a pretty good bike apart from the wheels. try get a 2007/2006 trek 1000 as the new 2008 models are not as good

Next bike up is not worth it mate. Between these 2, both are fine entry levels so assuming both fit, pick which one you like the look of best.

Really the next up would be the same bike with some moderately improved components. I wouldn't bother. Real entry level starts in the 700 euro range (there is a sub entry level 400-500 euro range also). At around 1200-1300 euro you start getting to true mid-range and into an area where an upgrade is actually worth it. Failing that, the difference between a 700 euro bike and a 900 euro bike ? Not worth the difference you pay.

On all these bikes the groupset will be functional, but as earlier pointed out the wheels are often terrible. One of the newbies in our club got a giant scr2, 880 euro or something like that, got rid of the appalling no-name wheels and put on some bog standard bottom of the range Mavic Askiums (about 160 euro), according to him it was like a new bike. I would tend to agree by the way, I flatted in my porch one day, so took the nearest wheel available that day which was the front wheel from the better half's OCR4 and it actually DID make me slower....

would agree with that, had the front wheel of a cheap bike stolen pretty early on, took the chance to get a set of aksiums. brilliant yokes, sturdy as all hell and look all right with it.

I was in your position this time last year trying to choose between those same two bikes. All shops I went to advised me to go for the Specialized so I did. No problems since. Good bike. Also, as said above, all the shops reckoned that to spend a couple of hundred more was a waste of money for the difference it would make.

Was in my local bike shop since I posted the last message. If you decide to go for the Trek there is a limited edition "Lemond" yellow livery Trek 1000 in stock.. and it's on offer at under €600. In fairness it's a beauty too. Don't know where "The Lock" is but I suspect it's not near me. Don't suppose this shop is the exlusive stockist of this bike either though...

The 'lock is Coolock! Ha ha, Eh So when you say the wheels on these bikes arent up to much, what do you mean exactly?? Thanks for all your help by the way.
