I thinking of buying an 04 passat TDi auto, and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with one.

surely some one has had one, or a least driven one?

I drove a 2004 Auto - lovely car. Great drive - plenty of torque when required. Auto box was quite smooth - slightly slippy but nothing that would put me off driving it. It had about 30,000 miles on it and never gave a moments bother.

I covered about 9k in one in 05, before changing to a DSG Golf.

Lovely driver, very powerful, fabulous gearbox. Mind you, with the 130bhp engine and auto, it wasn't that light on juice - about 38mpg. However, I did drive it hard, and it had a high spec.

All good for me . Mind you, look at my sig - I'm selling 'cos I want to go back to a Tiptronic..........

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I have a 2002 1.9 TDI Auto. Great car.. comfortable, huge boot and rear seat area and a great drive as crosstownk says.

But it's not all good. If things go wrong, the costs start to add up fast :(
Make sure the timing belt has been done if its near the 80k mile mark (and definitely if it's over this - make sure the water pump was done at the same time as otherwise it becomes a messy and expensive job as I discovered).

Also watch out for faulty oil sensors, door lock problems, tensioner problems (the latest problem with mine), and an issue where the gearbox occasionally slips into neutral for a second or two when the engine is cold and the car is stopped (say when turning at a junction). Once the engine heats up though there's no problem, and as noted there's more than enough torque for overtaking at speed etc.

All in all then, they're a good car (when they're running right), but be aware that VW aren't as "bulletproof" as they once were..
