When the Catholics of Waterford were permitted to erect a church on the site of the present Cathedral in 1700, Catholics living outside the city were not permitted to worship there. Instead, they celebrated Mass, in all probability, in the Faha Chapel, where Mount Sion now stands. In 1803 Bishop Hussey ordered the demolition of Faha Chapel, as, in his opinion, it was not a fit place for the celebration of Mass.

The present parish Church was built by Rev. Pierce Power (1807-1828) and completed by his successor, Rev. Michael Fitzgerald (1828-1842). It is called Holy Trinity, Without, i.e. outside the city walls, as distinct from the old Holy Trinity inside the walls.

Two new churches, Holy Family, Luke Wadding Street (1954) and St. Paul’s, Lisduggan (1971) were built in the parish providing places of worship in newly built areas. In 1972 the parish was divided into four separate parishes, Ballybricken – often now referred to as old Ballybricken, Holy Family, St. Paul’s and Butlerstown. Naturally, some of the parishioners retain an attachment to old Ballybricken.

Originally, the parish of Ballybricken extended almost as far as Tramore.
