    Scumbags :(

    Any real results yet?

Yeah tweaktown seem to be "the Sun" of computer journalism. I think they also claimed that quad SLi would benefit Crysis, even though anandtech's testing showed crysis was the one game that showed very little, if any, scaling.

If 286 is true then this will probably be quite a popular card.
Not really worth the jump if you already have an 8800gtx/g92 gts though.

286 is nice and Dabs are usually a tad expensive so hopefully it will be around the 260 mark somewhere....

It really is just an overclocked, tri-sli capable 8800gts G92, it should overclock a hell of a lot better though especially with the second power connector

The thing is Anand used a skulltrail mobo to do his gx2 quad testing in order to keep his results comparible with his x2 crossfire-x testing. It seems on nvdidia 790i mobo results are much better :

    http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_9800_gx2_quad_sli_performance/

It will be interesting to see if tri sli'd 9800gtx's will surpass gx2 / quad.

It's also a bit worrying that the only site which is reporting gx 2 quad slowdown with 4xaa in high resolution is hardocp who say the 256bit bus and 512meg memory route nvidia have taken is a major issue. Other sites are showing the opposite. Could be case of real world benches v canned benches.

3dMark is a pretty useless indication of real world performance, the 3870X2 has amazing 3dMark scores but fails hard in a lot of games...

Btw Quad SLI is too much performance in some games :D over 200fps in Fear @ 1600*1200 with 16AA and 16AF WTF?!?!?!!

A little bit of Tri Sli benchmarking here,

14500 out of the box with a Quad @ 3.2ghz seems pretty good

    Its ok

    The 8800gtx I used to have got 13.6k @ stock on a Quad @ 3.2ghz with cheap old ram ( 2gb pc 5300 )

    Another review:

    http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?cat=grfx&id=595&pagenumber=1

    meh :/

Nearly better off getting a 8800gtx on ebay, or a cheap 8800gts and clock it.... or crack open the piggy bank and get a 9800GX2

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭Sqaull20

Very disappointing, its clear this card is not cut out for 1920 by 1200..

Once the res is past 1680 by 1050 and the details like AA/AF are added it fails well behind the card it was suppose to replace...

They may scale well in sli, but that will cost you €550 at least...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭Sqaull20

Very glad now I went for the 9800gx2 for €435 and sold my 8800gtx for €255, both of ous got a good deal as it turns out :D

It is being launched April fool's Day...

I don't wanna be no fool!

Allegedly the GX2 is dropping in price to compete with the 3870X2 its currently around $200 more than it, so if it dropped to 350 it would be cool

I get the same with my 8800GTS and quad at that speed, I have to say I was expecting more from the GTX - it's not powerful enough, and the GX2 is - well, at the moment anyway - too expensive...

  • Subscribers Posts: 6,408 ✭✭✭conzy

Yup, the 8800gtx is 300 on Hardwareversand atm an a few on ebay going very very cheap....

Did I just get prematurely April fooled? :D

    Ya ;)
If i wrap a piece of poo in a nice wrapper and give it to you and call it gold it's still a piece of poo :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭Flaccus

Why don't you just wait for the review...we know it's the G92 core, but with 2 pci-e connectors, different circuitry etc.. it will probably overclock a lot higher then the 8800gts, and a lot of people are interested in how is scales in sli. It may not turn out to be a piece of "poo" afterall :D

    pci-e 2 thats lovely.

I wonder whats the gtx card ?

    512MB of GDDR3 memory,
    256-bit memory bus
    128 Stream processors.
    675MHz core clock,
    1688MHz shader clock
    2200MHz DDR memory clock

Buy one and find out :D
It probably clocks a lot higher then the gts, runs cooler with that CM fan, and I said you can run it in tri-sli which nvidia are saying scales really well. We'll know tommorrow when official reviews start coming out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 852 ✭✭✭blackgold>>

Maybe they sprinkled it with magic dust so it will run faster
Marketing is a wonderful thing isn't it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭Flaccus

Like I said..wait...you only have the rumours and announced specs to go on.
Noone has done a trustworthy review. Smarminess counts for nothing.

If I was to guess, I would say it will be a hell of a lot more overclockable then the 8800gts over the changes they made on the circuitry and having to power it with 2x6pin pci-e cables, and for some that will be enough. If it clocks well beyond what a gts can. So no, they didn't sprinkle magic dust.

For others they are interested in how sli and especially tri sli scales and how this compares with gx2 in quad sli.

For the average user a clocked 8800gts or indeed an 8800gtx with the 768meg ram and superior 384 bit bus may be the way to go, and who knows, maybe sli'd 8800gtx's will still be faster then sli's 9800gtx's. There is a commonly held belief that the benches we see on most sites are canned and not representative of real world gamesplay, therefore they never show texture memory running out, which in real world game play on 512meg cards with loads of AA can happen it seems, resulting in severe frame rate drops and stuttering; which is not seen on the the 768meg cards over memory size and superior 384bit bus. This belief is really only held by some enthusiasts and the likes of HardOCP. While most review sites put the 512 gts and 768 gtx on level playing field with the gtx being slower sometimes below 1920x1200 over a less efficient core, and only faster in very high res. In fact I saw a bench on Toms Hardware showing 2 x 8800gt's (not gts's) caning 2 x 8800gtx's. True or False I don't know. But maybe the overclockability of the 9800gtx will give it the edge over all previous cards and make it a good buy. Then again maybe not.

So yeah..it's probably just a rehash of the 8800gts 512, but for some that might be enough. Only have to wait till tommorrow for the reviews.

    Official

Card is good value ( should be as low as €265 )but its only a slight bit faster than a 8800gtx @ 1680 by 1050/ 1920 by 1200..At higher res the 8800gtx pulls away/ catches it..

Sli performance is roughly the same as a single 9800gx2/ slightly faster ( 9800gx2 can be had €450 now ),

Tri sli = equal performance to 9800gx2 quad sli, give or take a frame, nothing special really as tri sli motherboards are €200 plus...

Looking at the firingsquad reviews again when they did the benches on the GX2 a week or two ago and then redid them on the GTX today.

In Crysis at least, quad sli is definitley outperforming gtx's in Tri Sli. Not by much though.

    Crysis High Performance 1920x1200 2xAA
    9800GX2 Quad Sli 41.7
8800 Ultra Tri Sli 35.1fps today / 36.4 last week
    9800 GTX Tri Sli 32.2fps
    8800 Ultra Sli 29.5fps today / 30.4 last week
    9800 GTX Sli 27.4fps
    9800GX2 25fps today / 26.1 last week
    8800Ultra 19.4 fps today / 19.3 last week
    9800GTX 17.2fps today
    8800GTX 17.5 last week
    8800GTS 512 15.9 today/15.6 last week

Also, Toms was complaining about the gtx noise, and comparing to his review of the gx2 is does seem marginally louder. Anyone I have spoken to who has a gx2 though is happy with the noise levels.
