Hi, I'm trying to set up file shares between my linux pc and my windows xp home machine. Spent a fairly fruitless time googling with references to some secret decripple mojo for said windows . So I downloaded tweakui. But no joy. Anyone samba'd xp home machine to linux and able to explain how?

gonna need a lot more info than this.....

    Linux Distro?
    SAMBA version?
    SAMBA config?
    Error you are having...
What have you tried so far.

Not sure what tweakui was ment to help, anyway post up some more info and im sure someone can help.

    Hi,
it's ubuntu 7.10, samba is 3.0.26. I've used swat to set up default home directory shares. The linux host appears in network places in windows explorer, but I can't open it - it doesn't appear to accept my linux user/password. I can see the disconnect in the samba logs. I suspect it has something to with windows not passing on the user/password (see http://www.google.ie/search?q=windows+xp+home+samba ), but can't fathom out how to get round it.

Can you map the network drive?

No - going via explorer, map, I get the same symptoms when I try to browse to the linux server i.e. I see the host name, but trying to open it presents me with the user/password box I can't get past.

did you set up your user acc in samba? Samba has its own password database:

    sudo smbpasswd -a username

will set it up for you on Ubuntu.

thanks for the help so far, but still suffering. Tried Red's idea, now when I open the domain in xp explorer I get a big fat "<domain> is not accessible. You might not have permissions.." yadda yadda. Shoite. Tried to backtrack with the ever reliable -d variant, no joy. So back to incantations and dead chickens unless there are any other suggestions. PS. I am a bit pissed
