exhaust emissions

Hi a yelllow light has just come on my dash. When I cheched the book it says that the exhaust emissions have deteriarated. The guy who services my car is down the country. Does anyone know if it would be safe to drive 100 miles !? Or if they think the problem is serious ? Thanks

It could be one of many things such as an O2 sensor.
Driving it far could do more damage e.g. knacker your cat
