A slap on the wrist and a pat on the back :P

I'll clarify a little: More vigilante justice in cases where the perpetrators offence has any effect on another person.

What about those gobshytes who always seem to get away with it when the guards/wardens aren't around?

If there are those that are always getting away with it perhaps you should report them. Maybe get on to your local concil and inform them of the location so they can enforce it better. Thats part of what they are elected to do.

You know, the sort of things normal balanced people do.

I would never park beside a scummy car, you are what you drive ;) I always look for a parking space between two nice respectable cars, even if it means driving further away from where I'm going :D

Well no actually, I was advising people to be civil because that's one of Boards' rules and I'm charged with enforcing such rules. It's got nothing to do with my life in the real world.

If thats the case then all cars should too. Why city centres? Dont get me wrong i hate SUV's but i dont understand your point.

Valid reason for taking a SUV is no different than a valid reason for taking the car. People dont drive around the city centre for the craic.

SUV's have no place in the City Centres. Outside the City Centre could be someones home where they park their SUV and then go out of the City Centre to somewhere to use it like a farm or construction site or somewhere like that. Maybe not in which case they shouldn't be allowed there either. If you work on a construction site in the CC, you might have a valid reason to bring an SUV in if you had to park it on the site or something or bringing stuff in. Should at least have a system in place for when someone does have a valid reason instead of a blanket ban.

I don't think cars should be banned given people actually have to get places and public transport can't take that hit. Maybe cars over 2.5 litres or something like that. The reason to ban SUV's from the CC is stop people buying them in the first place when that is the only place they go. It'll encourage people to get a regular car since it'll avoid the hassle of not being able to bring it to the CC. Most cars have lower emissions than SUV's so it would also mean cleaner air (not much cleaner probably but every little helps).

A valid reason for taking an off road vehicle somewhere would be if you were going off road (i.e. to a construction site where a car might get damaged because it doesn't have the high ride height it might need).

If you want action to be taken about a zillion years later, yes, that would be a good idea. Those bitches who blocked up the street outside Argos and drove the wrong way down that street weren't bothered with anyone's rights, why give a fukk about theirs?

You have to laugh when you see things like that really.

Not liking the talk of keying the car though a bit much i think. If i caught someone keying my car there would be punches thrown for sure. There is no way i would ever key anyone elses car that's just crossing the line.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

To be honest, I know I wouldn't key someone's car either. That's not to say though that I wouldn't be cheering on the sidelines if someone did so to the car of a person who's a major asshole to other road users.

Oh OK so you decide the rules of this sort of vigilant behaviour
    TPD wrote: »

Well actually its debatable what impact that passtime has on society so thats for another day.

I'll try and clarify my point. Keying someones car just cos they are parked somewhere illegal is also illegal. So vigilante behaviour is a stupid idea for morons like the idiots who double park etc.

OT i don't agree all SUV drivers are tossers. Many other drivers in other cars are tossers too. Get real

Well the people carrying out the vigilante justice always decide the rules, the point being that if anyone is too harsh they will have vigilante justice brought upon them.

I get the feeling your against 'kryptonite', but thats not really the issue here. Vigilante justice would generally be based against an individual target, for something they have done to another person/group of people. A single person smoking kryptonite has no effect on any other person or on society. Half the country smoking it would likely have less effect than half the country doing other legal things.

And for a little touch of on-topic: SUVs admittedly do look class.

An eye for an eye and we'll all go blind. Who gives you or anyone else the right to dispense your own brand of traffic enforcement?

If minor traffic offenses vex you that much that you consider criminal damage acceptable maybe your energy would be better directed in campaigning for better enforcement. It would probably be more fruitful and less likely to get you nicked or killed by the owners of said vehicles.

Its illegal, I know that, but in cases where the offenders dont care about the law (plenty of woeful tales of lawless scumbags here on AH alone), I think vigilante justice would be much quicker and more effective than the time consuming legal process.

    Surprised nobody mentioned this yet.
Here's what Vincent Vega (John Travolta) has to say about people who key cars to his drug dealer Lance (Eric Stoltz) in Pulp Fiction.
    "Dickless piece of ****" LOL.

    It's actually 40 seconds in.

    Nuff said. :)

Vigilante Justice - to be used in important stuff. Like if someone rapes your 9 year old daughter.

Cars? Petty stuff. For people with far far too much time (and keys) on their hands.

It was indeed Dundrum, and today, approx 3pm. What was most annoying was there was about 30 spaces left in the entire shopping centre. The goddamn ignorance of it. If I'd the balls, I'd have keyed the goddamn vehicle.

Thankfully you dont have the balls.

Keying a car, for any reason is a Nacker thing to do.

What that driver did is plain ol ignorance and is irrelevant of what vewhicle they were driving.

Knacker is spelt with a k. It is silent though, so I'll excuse it this once.

    Je-hu-hesus.
This was one of those angry threads. Like a bad episode of a soap opera that you have to watch until the end, hoping that someone will eventually get naked.
I reckon there will always be a problem when callous drivers care not for other road users. Unfortunately, these callous drivers have cars and will always exist, regardless of any V for Vendetta style handing out of liberal justice.
Its quite likely that this SUV driver maybe had their car dinged by some moron and takes up two parking places because they dont want it to happen again. Or more likely it's a retarded bitch who doesnt give a flying **** about ruining other people's day. Could have been in a quasi-emergency situation, or just somebody who cannot park. Regardless of the excuses, people who do this are assholes. People who park in disabled spaces without being disabled are also total assholes. People who key other peoples cars becase they dont stick to their interpretation of the road rules are also assholes. People who let air out of people's tyres, well they're assholes too.
So basically what I am saying is most people are assholes, so we really should just drive around in bumper cars mooning each other and handing out our personalised copies of the rules of the road hiding under your cool paper policeman's cap.
OR we could just accept that this kind of thing happens all the time, that the only thing losing your temper behind the wheel will do is put yourself at risk of, you know, dying, and that keying a car is never ever the answer and is simply a cowardly act. If you hate the driver that much, leave a note or hang around and tell them, or tell the parking wardens or the cops. There are many ways of solving this that do not involve random acts of vandalism, and whether or not you feel the punishment fits the crime is not relevant, the government does not and would judge your actions more illegal than someone who, shock horror, dared to take up two spaces.

Keying is cowardly. Someone with guts would confront the owner face-to-face, throwing down the gauntlet, and challenging the offender to a dual with Boston cream pies at 10 paces!

Just a few comments on the original topic of SUV's etc.

Not many people are aware but when you go in and buy your X5 etc, you can avail of many upgrades. In BMW, the most popular are the DAYL and PAYL packs. The PAYL (Park As You Like) pack allows you to do all the above mentioned like parking across two spaces and on patch, disabled spaces etc

The DAYL (Drive As You Like) pack has much more features - with this, you can turns corners and change lanes without indicating, you can cut in, in front of other cars - it also allows you to drive in the Lana Bus (they are still looking to get this changed to Lana BMW) and it also allows you to drive right up behind other cars and flash them to get out of the way. Most of us are under the misconception that the outer lane is the overtaking lanes - it is NOT - it is the BMW lane.

These packs are available for all BMW's , not just the X5 etc

Some years ago, you used to have to pay for the DAYL and PAYL upgrade packs but now these packs are absolutely free !! The reason for this is because similar packs are being given out to Mercs, other SUV's, Landcruisers (if you have bullbars on your landcruiser, this means you can push people out of the way, if you so wish) etc - so, to be competitive, all these vehicles get these upgrade packs free of charge.

I hope this insight in the motoring world has helped people understand why these people act/drive like they do

A quick and dirty method of reducing SUV on narrow streets, would be to install sensors that measure the size of the vehicle as it passes, small family cars would just pass, SUV's and all larger vehicles would be stopped and tolled. Van drivers etc would be able to buy a "free pass" as they require a larger vehicle to carry out their business.

Some time ago in London I saw a car parked similarly to the one in the OP, but it was a normal car (Ford or Vauxhall or something) .... and someone had stuck a sticker on the windshield (right in front of the drivers seat) that said something like "Stop parking like an idiot" ..... but the sticker was of the security type and had really strong glue on it and would not come off in one piece....

I dont know if that would be more effective than letting air out of two tyres of not, cleaning that glue off would not be an easy task and the car is practically undriveable until that is done..... I'd rate that as being a better deterrent keying (if the driver was dozy enough to park like that, they would probably not notice the keying tbh)
