According to parkers the A3 averages 52 mpg and A4 is 50 mpg, A4 is 195kg heavier. Those figures are for the '02 shape 130bhp models.

Seen as the A3 is lighter it should return slightly better mpg, but i dont think you would see a big difference between the two so i would just go with whatever one you like best.
