Openoffice.org spellcheck function?

Im running open ofice.org 2.3 and the spell checker wont work for me! Any ideas on what to do? Im downloading the newest as we speak but im not hopefull this will fix it!

langague settings

= languages .. if you choose one without the blue ABC like english (eire) then it won't do spelling - choose english (UK) instead
= writing aids make sure check as you type is checked

type in color, colour to see if it works
