Is replacing the ring gear on a transit van a big problem?

Looking at a 01 front wheel drive Transit which has an intermittant fault with the starting motor failing to engage. Probably 1 out of 5 attempts on starting. Apparently this has been going on for some time. I suspect the ring gear could possibly be worn in a section. Is this a big job to replace? is the ring gear a part of the fly wheel or is it pressed on? has anyone had similar hassle?

You would be better off changing the whole starter or getting it reconditioned, mightn't be the ring gear - might be a faulty solenoid.

It is attempting to engage, the solenoid is activating the bendix fine. It seems like either the teeth on the starter or ring gear could be worn as it grinds when it misses.

Whip it off an see how the teeth are on it

What exactly is it doing? Is it just making a whirring noise when you turn the key?

the only transits that give flywheel trouble are the rear wheel drives ,fwd dont really as they have a solid flywheel there are a few possible reasons for your problem starter relays/starter etc

starter motors on transits are crap at the best of times the fwd ones usually get destroyed from fuel leaks from the injection pump
