I am talking about saps who talk in lectures. My god this p*sses me off big time. I'm not talking about the odd comment to your friend now, I mean groups of people having full on conversations in the middle of lectures. How rude!
There are 2 modules specifically that are just unbelievable. Both are 2nd science, PHARM20020 and BMOL20020. BMOL is a joke. Within 20 mins of the lecture, everyone is just talking openly, at normal volume and completely ignoring the lecturer. They actually drown out the poor woman. You actually can barely hear her. And bless her she's just too nice to say anything. Doesn't even ask them to be quiet. It's just so rude. Why bother coming to the bloody lecture at all?? Just go sit in Elements or O'Briens or anywhere that's not disrupting everyone else who actually wants to learn.
The same thing happened in Pharmacology today. People just started talking at like, half past and not paying attention at all to what the lecturer was saying. Seriously, stay at f*cking home!! Nobody wants you there anyway if you're just going to talk.
Do these people not have any respect? These lecturers are doing you a favour....they're there to teach you. Don't be such rude gits.
It's gotten to the point that I'm actually ashamed to be in these classes. And any of the d*ckheads who are in 2nd Science and talk throughout should be ashamed too.

Ok...rant over. I feel better now.

Oh and just to say...I have had modules with loads of different classes/courses and in lots of different years so I can compare, and I have to say I have never witnessed anything like 2nd science. They are by far the worst. Absolutely disgraceful.

Tell them to 'Shhh' and if that doesn't work tell them to 'shut up'. When I have lectures in the Arts building there are people who talk at normal volume thinking that because the lecture hall is so big nobody will hear them. If I hear them they get a stern 'Shhh'. I'm cool

    No first engineerings the worst.

But I was one of them. I think everyone was one of them

Oh, hell - I was hoping it would cease after 1st year. :(

I would have thought it obvious that the students are in that lecture room for one reason, and one reason only: to listen to the lecturer. No-one's logging your attendance - no marks for just being there. If you're bored, or if you already know the material... that's just you...

I wondered whether it would help if the lecturer turned the lights off - then, maybe, the talkers would think they're watching a movie, just not as loud. Then I realised that they're probably the type who talk during movies, too.

It doesn't stop after 1st year if you're a Civil. I'm in final year, we've lectures with them and they just never shut up. Elec is small so you don't really get a chance to talk without being glared at...

I have my very last day of lectures tomorrow. It's gonna be weird.

I hate big multi class lectures though - it's just too easy for people to keep talking through them.

OP,sounded like we are in the same year:)

and yes, today bmol i was sitting at the right corner --->the guy was talking loudly behind my row, while pharm i was sitting the 3rd front row from the lecturer--->i do realise that there are lots of ppl talking loud behind.....

all i can tell is our year is quite socialising than i imagine...its like they love to talk in lectures showing that they dont need to pay attention/they are smart/they are popular?
anyway, more of these disgrace ppl will disappear next year:) remember it was way tooo noisy of lectures in 1st yr?

Lucky all but one of my lectures is in Quinn this semester, its hard to talk in those small rooms, and some of the classes even a whisper will get you screamed at.

It is a pain when you want to listen and someone else its just being rude.

One of my lectures (Engineering Thermodynamics) is given by Dr. David Timoney, who was appointed Dean of Engineering this year. That's right: the top guy in Engineering at UCD is giving a 1st year lecture, and probably doesn't have to. You'd think that people would appreciate this, but no, there are full-blown conversations going on, and people arriving 20+ minutes late, slamming the doors and banging their bags around on the way in.

What are you even doing there? Do you know?

I cant believe people would be chatting loudly during a lecture! Don't they know people are trying to sleep! ;)

    Paula!?

I found the talking to be mainly in 1st and 2nd year. By 3rd and 4th year it had died out completely. I don't know whether that was due to those people not passing or the smaller classes making them feel less anonymous or maybe they just plain grew up but give it time and when a lecturer comes in people just automatically quieten down.

I agree, it's really ignorant but to be honest I get really annoyed at the lecturers as well - if they kicked a few people out of class everyone else wouldn't be long shutting up.

people were quiet in the bmol with prof newsholme today although not in hers

did feel kinda bad for the pharm lecturer though, but Ill admit Ive talked in lectures, sorry:(

Thats because Dr Newsholme shouts "SHUT UP!" to anyone who talks lol.
I'll admit that I do have a bit of a habit of talking in lectures.I try and sit near the front to resist talking, sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.....

Had a real charming gang of boys in the back of a class today giggling at one of them who belched in the middle of lecture. I really think letting primary school students sit in on lectures was a bad move on UCD's part...oh wait....

Not usually bad in computer science thank god :) But I've definitely noticed it in more general science lectures

    try to ignore the twats

i've tried the "shut the **** up" routine and it doesn't work, makes them worse and laugh at you, they'll only shut up if the lecturer tells them to

    Woodland Archaeology

Bloody civils! We have the usual maths with them and now they've taken to shouting out "Sorry I'm late" really loudly if someone comes in late.

But again, I can't talk. I'm incapable of paying attention in a class that big when everyone talking

The precise reason I haven't said anything. If I thought they'd listen I would, but they don't even listen to the lecturer never mind me.

I wish I could ignore it but when a lecturer actually walks out of the lecture theatre and refuses to teach you, it's kinda difficult. That happened on Thursday. Pr. Bannigan just said he wasn't bothered if we weren't gonna pay attention and left. This time it was radiography, physiotherapy and 2nd Science all together. It is absolutely ridiculous.

I swear to god, if someone sits near me in a lecture and talks throughout, don't be surprised if you get a punch in the face....

Doesn't Banningan teach neuroscience or something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 625 ✭✭✭princess-sprkle

The only people they're gonna listen to is lecturers. More lecturers should tell them to shut up. Its so so irritating :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 809 ✭✭✭woop

wait a minute I was in that phys lecture aswell with bannigan and in all fairness there wasnt that much talking..................towards the end it did pick up though but he did have lots of slides left and it was coming up to finishing time where people do start rustling because they have places to be!I just think it was that he couldnt be bothered finishing, hes angry that way anyway

its not just a few people who start talking towards the end though, ive found its the majority of the class(just like in the bmol) and it kinda snowballs if its let go

Another very rude thing is the people who feel the need for extra legroom and deside to rest their feet beside you/on your elbow/in your kidneys. I reckon I way break someone's foot at some stage.

Tobias Theiler is immense when it comes to people talking in lecture. He'll just stop talking mid sentence and state intently at the person talking. It works, and it's hilarious. The two girls who always always always talk in my lecture were made be quiet today. It was a nice moment.

Yeah i know, it's madness, i suppose that lecture is at 9 in the morning, no saying that's an excuse, but there's bound to be stragglers. But what's really bad about it is the people that are 20 minutes late, come in and start chatting away, feckin gobsheens
