We are looking to buy a house in Rossmore in Newtownmountkennedy. Having lived in Dublin for the last 7 years we are not sure if it is the right move as it seems to be quite far from anything.

We are not so sure about the area and any info about
    - security and safety
    - developments
    - social live and sports
    - transport (what is it like on the N11 every day?)
    - people
    would be highly appreciated.

Anybody living in Rossmore or Newtownmountkennedy please let us have your feedback on the estate and village. Thanks a mill.

Not sure how accurate my info is but ill give you what i know..
    - security and safety
seems ok. depends on what part. i think rossmore is probably fine.
    - developments
lots of new development. im sure youve seen the hotel. theres a dunnes stores going into the new building beside that, as well as a few other things. theres ski slopes being built up the back of newtown somewhere.
    - social live and sports
again dont know much. the pub beside the church has been done up recently & is nice (think its called the mount kennedy inn now). have heard good things about the food there, mixed reports about the food in the hotel, some say v good, some say its ok.
know nothing about sports other than the fact theres a gaa pitch up the backroads behind the town (near where the ski slopes going!)

    - transport (what is it like on the N11 every day?)
depending on what time you leave public transport might be better for getting into dublin every day. theres a couple of options for that: theres a bus eireann bus from wicklow that goes through the town, theres a couple of 84x's in the morning i think, or drive to greystones & get the dart from there. bus would take roughly an hour i think. about 50mins on dart from greystones to town.
    - people
same as people everywhere - some nice, some not nice. again its like everywhere, youll have some nice people & some knackers. i think with all the development there will probably be a lot of new people like yourself moving to the area.

i hope that was SOME help for you?

I moved here 2 years ago. It's ok, I seem to spend a lot of my time in Greystones though - go to Playground there, Toddler Group with my little boy, shopping. Not much to do in Newtown.

Rossmore is quite posh! :) I live in the Council Estate across from it and it's very quiet. Have heard of a spate of car thefts in Rossmore though.

There seem to be quite a few scangers in Newtown, my husband was threatened when he walked past the Town House Pub one day. Always gangs of intimidating kids hanging around 'Sentra' (with an S!!!)

Don't know about sport or commuting.

It's supposedly zoned for development though which will add value to house prices in the coming years - New hotel, new shopping centre, New Leisure Resort - plus the fact that it's so close to Greystones (which is getting a new swimming pool and shopping centre) but house prices are way cheaper in Newtown.

    Good luck with your decision!

You're husband was threatened!!:eek:they don't really bother with you unless you annoy them.
You get skangers everywhere tho it is worse in Dublin I've lived in Newtown for the last 5 years love it! My daughter goes to school up here and loves it I live in a quiet area in Kiladreenan nice place.
There is a hugely talented local GAA team in the area the juvenile section is well run too info can be got www.newtowngaa.ie
Also a soccer club that is very well run too they all look after the kids very well!!
The place is currently being developed at the moment so I would expect when all is done that the house prices will rise significantly.

Emmmm, we didn't annoy him. We were out for a walk as a family, me, my husband and our baby. Yer man was drunk and threatened to kick my husband's head in as we walked past. I don't walk in the village on my own anymore as I have to pass the Town House and there are always dodgy characters hanging around outside. I don't feel safe, especially not with my child.

Hence I do all my shopping and socialising in Greystones. Also have my son's name down for school in Greystones.

I don't mean to put off the O.P but if I could afford a house anywhere else in the area I wouldn't choose to live here

I totally disagree!!!! Kilcoole is far worse!!!!!!! I wouldn't live there if you paid me!!!!
Alot of stereotyping about Newtown people I would think.
I can't understand what is wrong with the local school your child will have no friends in the town he lives in going to school in Greystones.
My daughter goes to school in Newtown never had any problems teachers are lovely and she has alot of friends.
Grew up in Greystones myself so I'm not slating it think it's a bit of a trek just to send a child to school when there is a perfectly good one in the town.

Dunnes is supposed to be opening in a few weeks so would think that would be a huge plus.

Eh, well....it's a catholic school and I want my child to go to an Educate Together School.

I'm sure it's a lovely school. With the new interchange open now I'd hardly call Greystones a 'trek' !!

I'm born and bred newtown & have lived either there or in wicklow town my whole life.
My advise is: if you intend to spend time in the town then choose wicklow.

Newtown is probably the ugliest, chaviest place in the county.
Its not a plesent place to be.
Wicklow town has its problems too but as its a larger town it does have more to offer.
