Over 1 million fibre subscribers in Europe - study

Europe had slightly over 1 million fibre subscribers at the end of last year, according to Idate. This compares to 11 million in Japan and 2 million in the US. At the end of 2007, Idate counted 201 fibre projects, of which 88 began since June 2005. In 2007, as in the previous two years, most of the projects were led by local authorities and power utilities. Alternative operators such as Free and Neuf Cegetel in France are increasingly present, accounting for 21.4 percent of all fibre projects. A separate recent Idate study argues that the mobile advertising market will only really take off with the massive adoption of 3G/3G+, along with the development of real uses. This depends on appropriate pricing and services adapted for mobile users.
