M50 crash & insurance

A friend of mine was in a crash on the M50 the other week. She was driving home from work at about 5.30am, heading southbound on the M50 just after the Lucan exit.
The two lanes divided and separated for a few hundred metres and at the end of this they merged into one lane only, and it was at his point that the accident happened.

She was in the right lane which was merging back into the left lane, a left-hand drive truck was in the left lane, she checked several times to make sure she had enough time and space to merge into the lane but as she did the truck hit the rear passenger side of the car. The car then jolted forward, spun around and the front driver side hit the concrete barrier. The car was then pushed by the truck (which was lodged to the cars passenger side) down the road for about 100 metres.

First of all, it was a miracle that she was not killed, and thankfully she walked away from it, all be it very very shaken. I have to say that the works on the M50 do not make ideal driving conditions either. Especially with foreign drivers and the musical cones and barriers they seem to play.

She was told that the car has is 'uneconomically repairable' by the garage who looked at it. Then a salvage company rings her up and says that they'll offer her €7,500 euro.

What I would like to know is, how does all this work. Do the insurance company not give you what the car is worth and that is that?

    Any help would be great!

Interesting story but if you friend does not call the insurance company she will not know.
The insurance might give her 20k, who knows, depends of the value of the car, agreement etc..

And 7500 euro for a car which is supposed to be write off and completely smashed from the rear does not sound right, unless they can make a great deal of selling the front of the car...Sounds odd mate.

So basically she misjudged the distance between her and the truck and didnt increase her speed fast enough and just cut across the truck driver? Its her fault, is she trying to claim off the truckers insurance?

The insurance company will give you the value of the car minus the scrappage of 7.5k. You can either accept the 7.5k or ring other scrappage dealers and see if they would give you more. Make sure you contactt he dealer first and arrange for the car to be collected and paid for. If you are unable to contact the dealer the insurance provided, you can get another quote and this can be used instead.
