I wonder could anyone recommend me a product available in the local woodies for sealing a painted wooden surface from the elements (Outside) and providing some scratch protection. Regular clear varnish or is there a specialist product for this purpose?

if the surface has already been painted with an oil based paint then ur options are limited, its just more of the same.

If u are about to paint it then use a product like sadolins which is breathable and does not form a skin.

clear varnish can be a pain to maintain, also I dont know if it will 'stick to' existing painted surface.

What is it u need to 'protect'?

Its actually a table that I made out of plywood that I put a big Eyepiece case on beside my telescope. I painted it black with 'Rustins Quick Drying Matt Black paint for Wrought Iron and Wood' - It is a Low VOC product based on waterbourne, self cross linking acrylic resin....according to the side of the tin. The reason I now think I will need a glossy harder wearing surface is worries about damp. The scope and table are out a lot on dewy nights and also I have found that the big Eyepiece case is scratching the surface and while I expected this, I did not expect the scratches to be glossy scratches and thus highly visible.

I would not worry too much about the plywood unless it starts to swell. if u used wpb that wont happen.

To protect the surface try using a sheet of bit of material that is used in woodwork to keep stuff from slipping while u sand it on the bench etc

    give the idea.

ps I presume u can spot the Voyager and Pioneer probes with that kit:)
