What's Involved in a Research Masters?

    Hi,

I am thinking of doing a research MSc. I did my BSc part time and am doing a bit of lecturing by night now. I was going to do a taught MSc but none appealed to me.

So can anybody point me in the right direction or just let me know where you even start with an MSc as I would be doing it through DIT and I live down the country.

I realise I need to get my proposal together and that all my research leads to my final dissertation etc..but between the proposal and dissertation..like...what do you do?Read a lot?put together and reference other peoples work?I know this is a broad question but i'm finding it difficult to get any real answers on this. And I need to know what's involved before I jump in and pay the fees!

    GF

First off if you're thinking of doing a research masters talk to the person who will be supervising you. Ask them questions they will know whats expected of you and how to get there.

Second any Science research post-grad generally involves new work so you will have to, at the end of your PG, produce something completely of your own work and something novel (this means unique). How novel is novel is a different question.

Third don't worry so much about writing your proposal in regards to your finished project. Most people's project title changes once they start working and they go down different and interesting tracks.

Fourth if your doing a PG look for some funding. There have been a good few threads here recently in that regard.

Thats all that pops into my head immediately. If you are a bit more specific in your subject area people might be able eto give more detailed advice.
