While I agree that any music event like this shouldn't become a popularity contest, there is a bit more to it than the quality of the songs. As mentioned earlier in the thread, stage presence can really make or break a gig. My favorite live shows and my favorite artists are not entirely the same, because listening to a good band and watching a good band put on a GREAT show are two different things, and since this is a performance-based contest, the quality of the performance should definitely be taken into account.

I agree, but if you'd played in a band to very small crowds then you'll know it's hard to get into it if you're playing to nobody. Hence why closing the shutter for the first couple of bands is a load of sh*te... and stage times should be drawn out of a hat. Last band has an obvious advantage with more people there.

Only 1 of the bands who was on last won their heat. in the two previous heats the 2nd band won. so this point is therefore invalid. i'm not sure who won last wednesday. if anyone knows could they tell me.

Actually my point is very valid. I'm referring to BOTB 2006, and more specifically, the night my band competed.

Most of the time the judges already know who's going to win because they've heard the demos provided by the band to the Ents officer. This way they can rig who goes first, second, last and all that. The band going on last will win most of the time, this has been pre-determined by the judges.

well in the botb of 2008 (which is what this thread is about) 3 out of 5 finalists did not play last. thats the majority. i was at two of the heats and have no doubt that the best bands won, pretty convincingly tbh based on their performance.
Also if a BOTB every say they are looking for something totally different they usually go for what ever is popular at the time which in my experience is indie bands(no offence to anyone who plays indie music)

eh yeah how exactly to these guys sound ahem, "indie"..?

the best bands won, accusing winners of bribing ****ing sound engineers and influencing the judges is retarded and isn't fair to the bands who worked hard to get to the final, its bad form to try and take that away from them lads.

A few tweaks on the sound if you know the soundman or have bribed him are a big help in making a particular band sound great or totally crap.

The heat on the 26th of march.

Six bands, half the running order was pre-determined for three bands RNR, Oh, Child, and Gran casino. The reason behind this was because of the amount of members in these three bands, each one has over 6 members

Their is also some speculation that gran casino were invited to the event, considering they are palying many paid gigs supporting stone roses experience, the coronas, and the blizzards at various times, it begs the question, what exactly they were doing a battle of the bands for anyway

Then a draw was made for the remaining bands, October Rush, Holmes and Wizardfist who started off the evening.

In light of recent discussion on this thread i have come to the following conclusions.

The quality of the sound and light improves over the course of the evening, as is the case in any gig, anywere...well almost.

Also, in this battle o bands, crowd participation was a highlighted factor in determining the winner. Considering drunk students were the primary audience, it is obvious that they would arrive late, pissed and dance like crazy pig children for whoever the **** was on.

So, the running order of the evening was a pretty important factor in the evening. There should have been a straight draw with the six performing band included, instead the evening was segragated unevenly.

The possibilty of the bigger bands performing first was never even consider which is unfair. Each band paid the same few and should have been given a completly equal chance.

Also one of the judges is a member of the popular front who was out the back preshow smoking a fag with the front man from Gran casino!!

All in all, Gran Casino won the heat and put on a good show, but if the evening had been run differantly, Holmes or Oh, Child could have won it.

All in all, a typical D4 ucd take on life, "you want really badly, then just buy it"

Right, I'm tired of the number of people who have apparently registered accounts purely to post in this thread. Locked.
