Does anyone know which is the closest beach to Limerick city. I would have thought it was ballybunnion but according to the aa route finder that's 1 hr 30 minutes away and lahinch is only 1 hr 5? are there are any other beaches closer that i don't know about?

I would definitely say Lahinch is the closest or Doonbeg (which is nice but really only for surfing). There is also Miltown Malbay, also West Clare, which is nice and probably just a bit further than Lahinch, but I would think Lahinch is the best choice with probably the best road to travel as well.

The Ennis bypass has made the trip to any West Clare beaches such as Lahinch, Kilkee or Spanish Point that bit easier and quicker.

The AA route finder might not be that accurate. I remember driving to Lahinch a couple of years ago in just under an hour and that was before the Ennis bypass was open.

BTW are Miltown Malbay and Spanish Point the same thing, or seperate beaches? I can't seem to remember, it's years since I was there! but I think their in the same locality. Nice spots, not the commercialised sort of "Limerick haunt's" that Kilkee is - full of Sh%te hawks who think they were something before world travel became affordable. East end for the poor and west end for the rich and all that crap.

LOL that is the finest discription of Kilkee ever. :D

Lahinch definitely the closest with the most direct road

isn't that the beach where some people wash their horses, take them for swims etc?

I prefer ballyheigue myself, about 90 minutes away but it's a clean beach, nice and long for walks.

Milltown Malbay is the village before you get to Spanish Point , up the road 20 minutes you have Lahinch , down the road 10 minutes you have Quilty Village , Quilty Beach ..not great and SeaField Beach ..which is great if you have small kids .

Miltown Malbay is a village but the beaches close to it are Spanish point and White Strand.White Strand may have a different name but that's what we called it years ago.I loved this beach as a child even though there was nothing there.Agree about Kilkee---I was really never into it.

Both Ballybunion and Ballyheigh beaches are closer than Bana though.

Yea, Banna is quite a trek, nice area. You know if you like lakeshore swimming and Shannonside strolling, the two mile gate in Killaloe is beautiful its on the Ballina side bout 2 miles out towards Scarriff - only 25mins from the City!

Isn't Beale Strand closer than Ballybunion? I'm gonna need someone else to give directions though as it's been years since I've been there. It would be over an hour to get there I would imagine but if you are on the N69 side of Limerick?

What about outdoor places to swim in or near Limerick city itself?

Beale Strand - thats the one I meant - not Banna Beach. Was thinking Banna from the Motorbike rally this month. Sorry - was on the wrong track!

Dromore lake, about 1/2 hour out by the de bucket put on the Foynes road. Take the first right second left. Its fed by springs, so its really clean. Its lovely to dive in off the rocks (about 10ft).

Only problem is occassionaly you may get scumbags down there, but a lot of normal people go there too. Its usually fairly quiet on the whole.
