Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Windows Vista

Sorry if this has been gone over before, but I've heard a lot of criticsms of windows vista but when I look them up on the internet, the criticisms seem a bit technical.

I need to get a new laptop because my 5 1/2 year old laptop with windows XP has gone a little crazy, and also it weighs about 3x what other people's laptops do.

I use it for general office work - i.e. internet, standard documents (i use office 97) but if I do get a new one i might use it for dvds, games and other such.

    So my questions are:
    1) Is vista alright for day to day use, or is it a turkey?
    2) a co-worker has vista and told me it just closed down once destroying her day's work, does this happen much (or similar faults that would be less common with XP)?
    3) Would a Dual Core 2 1.6GHZ, 2G RAM (667) 100GB hard disk with a basic integrated video card be alright for running it, or will it be a bit slow?

Thanks in advance for any help

I've had Vista since end of last summer. I generally use it for normal everyday stuff (word processing, games, music, videos, downloading, web use etc.) I also do programming on it for college...
    1) Is vista alright for day to day use, or is it a turkey?
I think it's great... In college we have XP machines, i find that vista is a lot more capable than XP... (that's just me)
    2) a co-worker has vista and told me it just closed down once destroying her day's work, does this happen much (or similar faults that would be less common with XP)?
Never happened to me, but i'd imagine that something similar might - in very rare occasions - happen in all OS's... Just remember to save as you work and you should be fine...
    3) Would a Dual Core 2 1.6GHZ, 2G RAM (667) 100GB hard disk with a basic integrated video card be alright for running it, or will it be a bit slow?

2GB of RAM is nearly essential to run Vista, so that's a good choice... You mentioned games as one of the thins you want to do, with an integrated video card you're not going to be playing many games really, you'd really want to get a proper GFX card...

Thanks for your help. So am I right in concluding that it's not another Windows ME, and things like SP1 should smooth other things over?

Most important, if you're not using it for anything fancy, it's great.
