i dont drink and i have fun.

    plenty to do.

    yes!

well i drink but i'd never claim its because there's nothing to do. I just like it.

people who complain there is nothing else to do so they HAVE to drink pisses me off big time. There is loads to do, stop being pathetic.

    Irish people bother me.

    There, I said it!

I'd have more things i love about Ireland than hate. Don't know why people are saying scumbags. You'd swear we're the only country with them.

One thing that gets me as it does most other people is how we are supposedly rich but have the infrastructure of a much poorer Nation.

Little Scang-bags that walk the streets. i'm back from a week away (Sun holiday) and you just dont see them in any of those countries! we saw two one day and they were either English or Irish tourists. does my head in.
So you went to a holiday resort and didn't see any scumbags?
What exactly is your definitioon of a scumbag?
Do you regularly get attacked (in any way) by Irish scumbags, or do you just see people dressed in a certain way and judge them by how they are attired?

    Wait.
Silly question on AH. Of course you judge people by how they dress.
You just didn't see anyone dressed like that on your holiday.
Of course, the reason being that you just didn't recognise the local scum because they obviously don't dress in the same way as those in Ireland.

I think Bono summed it up best. When an American looks at the big house on the hill, he says, "That's going to be me one day, on that hill." An Irishman looks up and says "I'm going to get that ba5tard on the hill!"
    Indeed.
Proof of that lies in the irrational hatred of Bono by people in this country.

Yeah, breakfast rolls mean we are nearing the end of civilisation.
    Disgusting things.

Of course, there is also the option of not buying them and not judging those who do.

I actually find people who judge others on their choice of food and clothes are the most boring people you will ever meet.
The thing that pisses me off about Ireland is that there are far too many of these people.

Also Irish people are dickheads towards foreigners....we're supposed to be welcoming!

i dont think we have a reliancy on alcohol to have fun, this is still a hangover from oppressed 50's,60's,70's and eighties when there really was NOTHING else to do.

Irish people do not suck without drink, the most entertaining, funny ,intelligent, heartwarming, stories and conversations i have are with people in everyday situations like at work (i work in a factory.. the craic is mighty!!), or on the street etc, i just think when irish people get drunk it just magnifies the intesity of the big irish character! compare that with the loud brit/euro lager lout/football hooligan....... big difference!

anyway things i hate about ireland:

    1. the rip-off cost of everything

    2. the weather most of the time

    3. we still havent learned to complain about crappy service etc

    4. we vote in a government and then spend the next four years giving out about them

    5. our national soccer/rugby teams.

    things i love about ireland:

    1. we wear our hearts on our sleeves

    2. our national music/sports/literature

    3. guinness

    4. the craic

5 i could go on and on.....

I hate those pretentious piece of **** lighty walky things on o' connell street. And the spire. They try to look modern and all but it's just ****.

I also dislike the lack of snow in the wintertime (and sun in the summertime). Most of the year is just wet, grey and cold-mild.

I find irish people dress very plainly, and aren't very expressive. There's a lot of narrowmindedness.

And I AM NONE TO FOND OF the homeless YOUNG CHAP begging outside the spar down the road from me.

But in general I have very few problems. I don't hate Ireland.

    There are better places though.

I'm in Leaving Cert and (obviously) not underage! I've been getting into pubs for the last 2 years and I see the same **** every weekend! People of 40+ hammered off their heads drunk and making a disgrace of themselves......so it doesn't change for everybody when they grow up! I'm fairly sure that this is happening in every other town in Ireland too!
Many other people have posted replies saying they hate peoples attitudes to drink too!
if you weren't so dull, maybe people wouldn't have to drink?
    ;)

Tonite the whole town was out celebrating the pres being over and I was one of a very small number of people who chose not to drink! I didn't touch a drink tonight and still had a great time! Everyone i knew that was out tonite got drunk except the people that drive!

I love the people here, and I love being an Irish person, proud of Pearse, Michael Collins is a hero of mine (well he's everyone's hero kinda)...

    I hate...

    1) The economy seems stunted i.e. no great addition has been made lately in Dublin etc. The day the Spire was announced was the day I decided I don't want to live in Ireland anymore.

    2) I end up in the countryside all the time and while people who haven't been there love it, I don't really, I'm more of a city person.

    3) The Luas was another useless addition in my opinion.

    4) The Bus system is an absolute disgrace, they're never on time.

    5) There is no great attraction to the League of Ireland, I'd prefer going to big matches in Europe I suppose however I wouldn't want to live in England, it is too similar to Ireland in the way that it holds the same criticisms that I made of Ireland.

For those reasons, I want to live in Asia or America when I finish college, find work over in one of them more exciting places. However, I suppose that people in these places have criticisms for their homes too. But..

Yes, denigrating all those poor pricks from the former soviet republic of prickistan. Sure its not their fault that the Presidential Prick turned out to be bent and started deporting pricks left right and centre. Whats a wandering prick to do only beg outside spar?

So you've been in loads of different cities then. I've been in a few and this place is pretty bad for its size. The culture of drinking is everywhere.Advertisements for booze are on nearly every billboard.Dublin is being sold to tourists as one big Guinness theme park. Its crazy.

I hate the way Ireland is regarded for its "Drink". That annoys me so much. Why do some people head out at weekend to get "completly wasted" where is the enjoyment in this? I envy foreign countries attitude to drinking. For example when i was in Belgium on my holidays last year, i noticed a vending machiene which had soft drinks but also cans of beer on a street. In ireland we couldnt do this as underagers would completly abuse this. I really wish we could have a postive and mature attitude towards alcohol.
That is just one thing i dislike about Ireland!

In other countries getting sloshed is very different to here. 10/12 pints in a night should not be completely normal

The problem with Ireland is its full of Irish. :D

    Ok seriously ...

    1. Americanised. We're practically an American state culturally. Maybe a bit fewer idiots and more scumbags but we're so Americanised its sickening. And yes I know there are plenty of people here who would be proud of being called "Americanised". Well fair play to ye.

    2. Money, Money, Money. Its all we seem to care about anymore. Again, there are plenty of you who think thats a good thing, I know.

    3. Politicians. Couldn't be more corrupt if everyone of them had to take a 6 month correspondence course with Charlie Haughey before going through 8 years of a Phd in corruption ran by Tony Soprano. No this is not what politicians are like the world over, why ? because any of them that are like our scum wouldn't last a week in the job in most other countries.

    4. Scumbags. Could we possibly have any more ? They're like bloody rabbits.

    5. Justice System. I had my first experience of the receiving end of this first hand lately. I was really really surprised actually. As long as you don't have a certain last name or are a known affiliate of such and such they want to do you for everything and anything they can. I mean, they literally spent about 30 minutes trying to convince me I had taken drugs and to put it into my statement. I eventually lost the head and told them to test me, they didn't want to because they knew bloody well I hadn't. (and by the way it wasn't for anything serious)

Oh and what I mean by being a known affiliate, having a last name etc etc is the scumbags. I have seen it so many times, they are actually afraid of the scumbags round here. I have seen two guards literally see a fight, turn around and walk away 5 or 6 times. You call them if theres "trouble" and they might come out, but mention a known scumbags name or the "tinker" word and you might as well have sent them a letter because they won't go near you till its all over.

    6. rip off. Do i need to say more ?

    7. Joe Duffy, Gerry Ryan and every other eejit on RTE.

    8. The "Ah sher it'll do" mentality.

Actually I'm in Korea at the moment and they drink as much if not more then us and you know what? They generally don't start fights after it.

The bars here don't shut and it seems to be the law that after work every businessman has to get sloshed and waddle home at 5-6am with his mates.

I've seen one single fight here that wasn't even serious.

You can walk ANYWHERE in Seoul at any time of the night without fear, with a population of 23 million including the surrounding area thats what I can fairly amazing but then again I'm used to Ireland.

The only scumbags in this country I've had the "pleasure" of meeting are the ones with American accents.

If you're staying...have you anything constructive you'd like to see happen ?

There are some top class whingers on this thread, i'm willing to bet that's all they are. Don't like something, try and change it....or get some perspective. Apart from Scotland and Wales, name me a country that is more like England than Ireland is?

So apart from the two closest countries to England you say the next closest is like Enland? Duh?

I've just moved back from a couple of years living in London and there are huge cultural differences. They've got better transport and planning but socially they're well more down the toilet.

Trust me, go live in a few other countries fr a few years, if you like them stay but you'll realise we have it good here.

I´ve moved to Spain and I think the problem with a lot of Irish people is that we really don´t want to be seen as being English but we seem to think we are very like them.....................lots of people over here thankfully recognize that we´re different.

If you really really hate Ireland, just fcuk off somewhere else. You have to question yourself sometimes, Is the problem this place or is the problem me?

Anyone who bitches about the roads, health service and all that ****........has it really affected you???? I mean if the roads are p!ssing you off so much, move closer to your job(yeah the one where you probably get way more money than in most other countries in the world).

Sure we drink a lot, but if that really really REALLY p!sses you off, then fcuk off to Saudi Arabia were life could be so much sweeter for you.

    Take a look around.
Anywhere in Africa, South America, Asia should do.

The problem with us is that right now we don't know how good we have it.

And for a country who just ONE generation back had it so bad that's pretty shocking.
Absolutely. You don't even have to look at dictatorships - try another democracy that begins with "I" and has a majority catholic population.

You obviously haven't been to an A/E recently.or travelled across Dublin.Or doged the huge amount of drunks everywhere.Incidentally, the dail sat for 78 days last year. This place is a joke.
mathie was talking about political corruption, not drunkenness. If this place is a joke, seriously why haven't you gone? If you were just getting things off your chest, fair enough, but you have major problems with the place.

Why is that stock answer "why don't you leave?" always posted.
Because this time it's hugely warranted.

Oh ok then, my bad! I hate these Eastern European fellas that come in and mouth off about how bad everything is then get all defensive when everyone else asks why they dont just leave. That ok for you?
I'm not from eastern europe.I'm born and raised in ireland and because i love the place i can point out its faults too.I thought this stuff is supposed to be fun.some people want to lynch me for saying ireland might suck a teeny bit.Ah well.

Ah the usual - only considering extremes rather than taking the middle ground into account. I didn't SAY that. You're not getting off your chest what annoys you, which would be a different matter all together. There's plenty that annoys me about Ireland too. But you're coming across as someone who's actually miserable being here, in which case you'd be doing yourself a favour by moving abroad - even just for a while.

Oh no, nobody would want to "lynch" you for saying Ireland "might suck a teeny bit" - if that's what you said. Thing is, you didn't say that, you said Ireland was a kip and you could go on and on about what's wrong with it. Do you see the difference? I'm sure you do.
