This sums it up perfectly, the same as every other globalised economic unit. Everywhere is nowhere.

I remember when the irish social scene was enjoyable and a time when alcohol consumption was not so morally unacceptable to the masses (govt) and when the Irish were "characters" brimming with an eccentric optimistic disposition despite the economic and climatic gloom. and witty too.

    I could be anywhere now

Are you sure that's not just looking back with a rose-tinted view,or exaggerating the degree of difference between nations? I don't see the Irish becoming exactly like the yanks or the English.

I have. I was treated within an hour.

Either you were pretty sick (ie your chart was stuck in the urgent box) or you went in on an incredibly quiet day/night which ain't the norm.

Irish people don't moan enough. That's why so many things are sub standard here despite being a 'first world country'. We let people away with doing a crappy job because complaining is looked down on and people who do their job properly/complain about poor service are described as being a 'fusspot' or not easy going enough.

I work with plenty of foreign people who have commented that ireland in general is a very friendly welcoming place.

Hee hee I've heard people say that too. Thing is the same people don't socialise with the Irish. They tend to work, stay at home on their days off or go out with friends from their own country.

Sure there's friendly people here but there's no more here than there is anywhere else. And there's a heck load of ignorant racists.

I represented Ireland at this event two years ago in Brussels where I met people from 28 countries around Europe. I talked to loads of them. First thing we did when we met someone was look at their badge to see where they were from. When they saw I was from Ireland, I got comments like 'are you drunk yet?', 'oh yeah you have the guinness', 'ah Ireland, lots of drinking' etc. That's all people had to say. Seems the stereotype does exist.

I was shocked when I saw how friendly the people at the till are in the canteen where I usually work. Irish people behind tills are usually so rude and dismissive. That's a fact that I've heard quite a few other people comment on. If we're such a friendly nation, why is that the case? I've travelled to a lot of other countries and I've never encountered that on such a scale. Odd methinks.

    lol.. Yeah, stereotype does exist.

Ireland is well know as the country with the largest consumption of alcohol. 11,2L of poor alcohol a year/person (for ex. 28L of vodka). It's no 1 in Europe.. and still growing!

Liver problems increased +147% comparing to 10 years ago.

But of course, it's stereotype that Irish are drunk every time. I met many 100% non drinkers.

RTE produced shows are so tacky and garrish. When I go to a european country I always laugh at how euro-trash their tv programmes are but were just as bad the late late show has some awful hilarious acts on it's pathetically humourous. Maybe if they gave these "stars" a pay cut they could pay for better production.:pac:
I agree RTE can be utterly drivel and TV3 is best left unexamined. That said we're comparing our own output to that of the US which does produce very good drama as an example, plus we're comparing ourselves to the UK and the BBC in particular which has arguably among the best TV output of quality in the English speaking world. Against that backdrop we're not that bad. Try Italian or Spanish or even French TV which is laughably dire.

Having traveled a bit I would say the Irish are more instantly friendly. Yes we do drink far more and the level of aggression here, particularly in small towns after dark appears higher when compared to mainland Europe. The thing I noted with the latin countries is that there is a wider age group out at night. All the way from kids to grannies. Men are less likely to start or tolerate fights or drunken behaviour with kids around. The need to get twisted is less. Drunken women to the degree you see here in and in the UK are far less in mainland

I also agree with Chunky Monkey on the farce that is our medical service. In the last few years I and friends and family have had occasion to visit casualty and the delays and frankly the lack of efficiency and in some shocking cases the lack of professionalism is nothing short of a crime in one of the richest countries in the world. People are suffering and needlessly dying here ever single day. It's nothing short of a crime.

Our infrastructure or lack of it is another issue. I can think of no single public utility that could be pointed out as an example to others.

Yes we are prosperous mostly on the back of outside money and a need to catch up with the rest of Europe. We have the cash now where we didn't in the past. That's cool, but I would compare it to a person who wins the lotto rather than earns it. As the framework of earning and using the money has never been learned, the ability to spend it correctly has also not been learned and it's more likely to be frittered away. That seems to be the case here in many ways. While you do see this elsewhere, there is also a feeling of "ah sure it'll do". That and the idea that someone else will take care of it. The lack of polish on things is more evident here IMHO. I've certainly seen that in business.

It's funny though the Irish seem to work harder and better when they're away from here. Indeed for such a small island our influence on world culture is and continues to be vastly out of proportion to our size. Compare our influence to countries of the same or much bigger populations and advantages. In many ways it's a great place to be from but not such a great place to be in. Still proud of it and us though. The muppets and the bog man attitude doesn't outweigh the good for me.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    What I like about Ireland

Jobs - Salaries , Work hours , even the small perks like a few nights out etc.

Air travel . We can travel to lots of place quite cheaply. This was unheard of 20 years ago and the amount of foreign trips we get in is high compared to other countries.

Foreigners . You can meet loads of people from all over the world here.

Pub culture , Not only the drinking but pubs these days do some great food as well.

    Irish Humour.

    What I don't like.

Expensive prices on essential items , people willingly paying 100 euro on a meal or 6 euro on a pint does not bother me. But high prices for essentials like doctor fees do.

    Traffic.

Infrastructure , not only is it bad but we had a great chance over the last 15 years to improve it and we didn't.

    Scumbags

    Poiticians

They can take the women. If the irish women were worth fighting for, we'd make the effrot.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

what i hate about Ireland, well it is really people who don't care and are too lazy so whether it is people who drink too much or those who throw litter on the road or the general lack of help such as making a phone call to a business to leave a message only to be told that theres no one around and could u phone again tomorrow?

Yeah, i go out in town quite a lot and i'm sorry but there just isn't as much violence/fighting as people make out, now don't get me wrong i've seen the odd scuffle here and there as you would expect in any city after the pubs/clubs close but not near as much as i've seen in some country towns.

Aggressiveness I believe. Why do some Irish people tend to very aggressive. Simple things like shopping, eating out etc. Sarcastic responses in bars, food being banged down in front of you. When you travel on your holidays you do not expect to be treated that way, and you don't. So why does it happen here?

Has anybody ever been treated like that?

    • RTE unoriginal television
    • No decent new rock bands here
    • Sh*t Irish movies that are really just TV dramas
    • Gerry Ryan
    • Sport means GAA/Soccer/Rugby/Golf - nothing else gets a look in
    • Education system turns out drones who cannot think differently from each other
    • You're A Star no hopers

    • The cinemas show the exact same new movies as each other
    • Too expensive to see big-name bands in concert

    • No decent new rock bands here very few new decent rock bands period
    • Sh*t Irish movies that are really just TV dramas some great irish movies down the years though and the money the Irish film board receive is pathetic
    • Gerry Ryan meh
    • Sport means GAA/Soccer/Rugby/Golf - nothing else gets a look in horse racing, snooker. Its a small country how many do you want us to play e.g. in the US ice hockey, basketball, baseball and football totally dominate.
    • Education system turns out drones who cannot think differently from each other at least its better than having millions of stupid people
    • You're A Star no hopers reality tv sucks, at least we here in ireland are not too bad when it comes to this crap
    • Most towns are just smaller versions of Dublin thats why the west is the best :)
    • We have never (and will never create) our own sub-genre of electronic dance music probably a good thing ;)

    • Too expensive to see big-name bands in concert 70ish euro last week to see Bon jovi, razorlight and kid rock along with some irish band together on one card ie the best part of 6 hrs of live music
    • The wet and damp weather could be worse try living in death valley for a week or greenland
    • We haven't a hope in the Olympics this August without investment don't expect a miracle
    • We're a complete joke in the Eurovision Song Contest and that is bad how exactly :D
