E Numbers.

    Just for my own information, could someone post up what all of these E numbers mean when referring to bmw engines. I always thought they meant something about food additives but when I read about E36, E this and E that then I really havent got a clue about what poster is referring to.

    Engine codes would be M's and N's, and for M models S's. The E numbers are used to distinguish between the various models e.g. E60 is the current 5 serius saloon, while the touring i.e. estate is the E61, and the previous 5 series was the E39(and not e30), which in turn replaced the E34.

    The Wikipedia article only really mentions what the E numbers stand for(soon to be replaced with F numbers, starting with the next generation 7 series, the F01/F02.

    If you Wikipedia "list of BMW engines" you will find a lot of info(though the articles about the latest engines from BMW are not terribly accurate at all)
