I am actually ****ting it about getting my braces off, my front teeth are very sensitive and my orthodontist is eh... a very not nice man, so that won't concern him in the slightest. If i pop a few nurofen or something before I go in, will that help numb the pain? It's the drilling off the cement I'm worried about by the ways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭Solarball10

WOOHOO!! Was at my check up today and he told me that I may be getting them off on my next visit in April - 3 months before scheduled time :D

Kablamo, I'm scared bout getting them off too...anyone got any tips, is it painful?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,375 ✭✭✭fonpokno

Getting traintracks taken off is absolutely fine! My dentist didn't even tell me he was taking them off, he just did and i didn't feel any pain at all! It really isn't bad at all.

My gums felt like jelly for a while afterwards just cos it was so weird having a mouthful of teeth instead of a mouthful of scaffolding. You won't be able to stop smiling, guaranteed! :D

Edit: Also wear your retainer. I've met so many people who had braces for 2/3/4 years, decided not to wear their retainer and now their teeth have gone back to how they were before. And it's entirely their own fault so please please please, for your own sake, wear your retainer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭Solarball10

Been a while since my last visit here! OK, I didn't get them off in April as hoping, am getting them off next week for DEFINITE, woooooooo!

I've been told I will be wearing a permanent bond/retainer at the BACK of my teeth instead of just wearing a normal retainer for a year - apparently because your teeth move all the time as you get older, and the permanent one is much better. Anyone else have this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,375 ✭✭✭fonpokno

I have a permanent retainer on the back of my bottom teeth.

Might irritate your tongue for a week or two but it's grand altogether. You need to clean it with interdental brushes or superfloss but I've never had any problems with it!

Hey all, well today is IT!! I am finally getting 'em off :D

Excited and nervous at same time...a bit scared it's gonna hurt! But mostly excitement :)

Hope it all went well ozzy!

i'm so happy :D I literally can't stop grinning! They look fab - and it literally took 5 mins to snap 'em off - didn't hurt a bit!

To all who have braces - it's so so worth it, trust me!

Yay congrats Ozzy! Enjoy your smooth n straight teeth!

Annoyingly I am stuck with the stupid retainer for the next while, (got my tracks out in early June).

May I recommend going to your dentist now for a good cleaning, there may be some little bits of cement left that the ortho did'nt get off.
Makes you mouth feel so much nicer and cleaner :)

I'm delighted for you ozzy. It's such a great feeling. How are you finding the permanent retainer?

It's not too bad...just feels a bit weird having the wire behind my teeth instead of in front! I'm sure it's a matter of getting used to it though :)

On a separate note, I need to have a scale and polish done as well..it's 85 euro in place I got braces, which I thought was kinda pricey...maybe not? Is that going rate? Anyone know of anywhere cheaper around city center?

Yeah I got my work done there too but I'm pretty sure you can't just saunter in and get a scale and polish.

well i got mine off in june..but they are a weird feeling at 1st and will prob be sore for a few days but once they settle you'll be fine :)

Just wondering, I have had braces on for about 6 weeks now and initially my gums were sore for the first week when eating etc. While the soreness went away, I still have difficulty biting things with my front teeth as it's a bit painful.

Is that normal? I'm just wondering if I'm worrying over nothing. I'm not in any pain as such, except a bit sore when biting with my front teeth.

    Any advice appreciated.

Just got my braces fitted on my back teeth (had front ones done two weeks ago). It sucks balls because you can't chew properply. I had to get two wires on my bottom teeth this time and nurse said "you might feel some discomfort" ie. Welcome to pain-town population You. I hate my teeth.

BRACES are better than belts they keep your trousers up

Got mine off on Monday woop-woop!! However, the removable retainer they gave me is making me gag! Is this normal, is it just a case of getting used to them or should I go back to my ortho?

I'd say it just takes some getting used to.

The first week or so it really feels like quite a mouthgul, but you adjust to it gradually, just like the braces:)

I have had my braces for over a year and I still cant really "bite" into things. its slighty annoying but you will get used to it and just work around it.

im getting mine fitted on 24th November, any one any tips, i've heard so much stuff like brushing after every meal, this will be awkward in work, also just wondering am i too old at 34 to have braces, has any other people in 30's 40's or 50's had braces, im dreading it but just want to get it over and done with now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,375 ✭✭✭fonpokno

Make sure you get some dental wax, you'll either get it off your dentist or in any pharmacy. It's very handy if the braces are rubbing against your the inside of your lips and making them sore.

Don't try to eat very hard food in the first few days, break yourself in gently. Also I wouldn't try biting into an apple, I sliced up all my apples for 2 years.

It's definitely a good idea to have a toothbrush or just some superfloss with you because food does get caught in them quite easily. I used to check them after every meal just to be sure they were clear.

You're never too old to sort your teeth. You might feel a bit paranoid about how they look at first too but you get used to them so quickly and so does everyone else. Good luck! :)

im so bored of having mine on:(i live for the day i can finally get them off

I've had mine on for two months now and had my first tightening this week. It wasn't half as bad as I was expecting. My teeth are a bit sore but I was expecting that. Having the first tightening was a big step for me, as I means I'm one bit closer to getting them off! :)

As getting braces in your 30s, I have been surprised at how many adults I have noticed wearing them. You will be paranoid at first, but it quickly wears off!

The tightening seems to vary for people. My sister used to get terrible headaches with hers whereas I just had some tenderness when biting!

How long have you had yours for Saranne? I know they're a pain but it's soooo worth it in the end.

Probably not. I found the spacers to be the most painful part of the whole process. I just got my braces off yesterday after 2 years. Tis worth it I reckon :D .
Nurofen is your best bet. Once the bands go on, you won't have the same pain (in my experience anyway) although you will have to deal with abrasions on your mouth. Use wax at the first sign of trouble. Don't wait until you have a sore.

thats great to hear, can eat properly or nothing with these spacers and my back teeth are aching but if braces are more comfortable then i think i should survive the year or 2 i have them on

Well done to all who have survived braces.

I got Damon braces on Friday, they really hurt and to make things worse already one of the wires has come loose from its bracket so will have to go back to the dentist this week again...

Do wires come loose often??? Its the dentists fault, I havnt eaten anything since Friday for fear this would happen... Dont really know how I can last a year on these things. I might just get them off and put up with messed up teeth

ok i got braces on the lowers today but they now want to expand the palatal on the roof of my motuh but want to this by surgery, has anyone had this done before? is it soar? the surgeon said it was fairly routine, he will also remove some wisdom teeth when he is doing the expansion. i will look odd now going around with braces on my lower jaw over the christmas and my upper jaw is the teeth that need the braces

Hey I just got braces in september and in august i got a palate expander on to expand my upper jaw to try and correct my bite, as i have an underbite. My dentist said surgery was an option but its quite heavy and a good bit of recovery time but perhaps it depends on the preference and experience of the dentist. Ill probably have it on maybe 2-3 months more. Personally id prefer that to surgery but i guess its up to you! good luck with it :)

Sounds like your orthodontist knows exactly what they are at, thats the thing with all dental treatment, that people on these forums fail to believe, thats that the easy thing to do is usually not the best thing to do. Best of luck

hi zaynar, id say to you that you came this far so you might aswell go and get them fixed and give it another try, you will only regret it later on, im just after getting my lowers done and eating anything feels terrible then all the cleaning but im slowly getting used to it so you should try eating even if it does feel too good you wil just get used to it

oh god the ortho put in that expander and it felt so bad, i couldnt swallow properly or nothing, then the surgeon that was there with the ortho said to take it out and he would do the surgery as its less hassle than the expander and he can remove the wisdom teeth too, i have an overbite so i have to have other surgery to correct this in about a year

This looks quite interesting - I had been aware of some animal research using microvibration to enhance orthodontic tooth movement, and it does seem as though it can, to a degree, speed up tooth movement.

I contacted the manufacturer for some more information: The technology is still relatively untested in humans. There was a limited clinical trial in the US (14 patients), albeit apparantly without a control group, but the preliminary results suggest that, used once a day for 20 minutes, the device may increase the rate of tooth movement by 30%-50% which, by my calculations would potentially reduce an average 18 month course of treatment to about 13 months.

However, I think these results need to be interpreted with caution at this stage. Although it seems reasonably certain that low intensity vibration can accelarate tooth movement, it has not been established how this actually affects treatment duration - what's needed is to treat a group of patients using the device, and another similar group should be treated in exactly the same way but without the device. The treatment times can then be compared (ideally in a blinded fashion - i.e. the person treating / evaluating the cases should not be aware which patients are using the device). I understand that a trial such as this is being planned, but it will be some time before the results are known.

At present, the device is being used on a trial basis by a small number of specialist orthodontists in the UK. The company plan to launch it more widely in October 2010, assuming positive feedback from the trials.

Now the bad news - the cost of the device will be about £750 sterling. My personal feeling is that to be able to justify this additional cost to patients, a significant proven benefit in terms of shortened treatment time would be necessary.

Definitely an interesting development though, and as with most new technology the price is likely to decrease over time.
