Water in heating oil tank

    Hi All

    Recently the plastic cap on the inlet to our oil tank came off leaving the rain in.
    Then outlet is about an inch off the base of the tank..

    Any suggestion what to do and what will happen??

    Probably nothing will happen, all depends on the amount of water that got in - if it was only for a short while, there's probably not a lot. It will sit in the bottom of the tank. Apart from pumping all the oil out and cleaning the tank, which you don't want to have to do, if you think that there is a lot, you could get some kind of pump and put a hose down to the bottom of the tank and try to pump out the water. You could also try to syphon the water out using a hose, start it off by sucking :eek:

    If boiler is running ok then its fine if not the oil will float on top of the water and you could drain water off via the fitting at the bottom of the tank or the bleed screw on the boiler

    There is no drain on most plastic tanks - and if the water gets as far as the bleed screw on the burner, it won't be running. Also if the water gets as far as the burner, it will damage the oil pump. In fact, you cannot get any significant water from the tank through the bleed screw on the burner. You would only lower the water level to the outlet pipe.
