i have cod4 for pc and really want to play online but i think my connection speed is a problem. I live in Kerry and my internet comes from vodafone g3 and the speed is not that great. I am experiencing a lot of lag in the servers i connect to at the moment and wondering if there is a server i could connect to with my poor internet speed so i can at least have a good flowing game. Maybe an irish one?

    just a few Q's:

Does that fact that i have wireless g3 effect the fluidness of multiplayer gaming compared to dsl broadband?i did a download speed check on pitstop and it is around 350kb/s- does this speed matter much for online gaming?

How does Ping relate to internet speed or does it?

i would appreciate any help given.

    Thanks,
    Boggy

Your Ping is the all is the problem man, it is how long it takes info to go from your PC to the server , it is going to be ****e on any of those mobile phone connections. I will play anything with a ping of up to 200ms, but many people start to bitch if their ping is higher then 100ms. I would guess that you are getting at least 300 ms pings with your connection, am I right?

There are 3 components to every Internet connection

    Speed, latency and packet loss.

Speed is how much data the connection can pull down/up at any given second.

Latency is how long it take for the data to make a round trip to the destination.

Packet loss is how many packets of data are corrupted/stopped along the way.

Unfortunately 3g can only really offer a decent speed, the other two are generally horrific. They also happen to be the two that games really need as they demand very little bandwidth. Because of this the game will be laggy and stuttery. Not much we can do.

Loads of helpful people come into threads like these and go about explaining this particular problem . Krazy8s should be bookmarked and quoted from now on as it is the most straight forward simple and easy to understand I have ever read . Most of us know what it is but get carried away with explaining it .
