Modern Jazz (since the 80s)

Any advocates of modern jazz here, I don't know alot about jazz post Miles Davis. Just wondering if there are any greats, albums or players around now. Usually when I try to research buying some new jazz it is mostly re-issues or newly discovered live sessions of the greats. I read Ray Comiskey's reviews in the Irish Times but in fairness he rarely gives a bad review.
Has jazz peaked/stagnated. Where do you find out what is really good new release these days?
Would welcome a discussion or some recommendations.

While a lot of the jazz greats have passed away recently, there is another generation of talented musicians coming along. IMO jazz is far from stagnated. It's just a matter of knowing where to look.

Some names I would recommend checking out are : Chris Potter, Joe Lovano, Courtney Pine, Bob Berg ( sadly killed in a road accident a few years ago), Kenny Garrett, Dave Holland , Rick Margitza, Greg Osby, Steve Coleman, Don Grolnick, the late great Michael Brecker, and John Schofield ............. for starters

A good magazine for keeping abreast of what's happening in jazz is "Down Beat". You could subscribe to it , or I think it's available in "Tower" in Wicklow St.

Rigsby's suggestions are all worth a look. I really like some of Joe Lovano's Nonet recordings, and there's a Dave Holland double album called Extended Play that should belong to any modern jazz collection. Robin Eubanks and Chris Potter play on that too, and there are some fascinating solos and interplay between the horns. Check it out!

I'd say i listen to more modern jazz then older stuff. Avishai Cohen, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau and Neil Cowley are some of my favorites and i've seen all of them live.
