just got timetable for fifth year
    it was a disaster..:eek::(
im faced with having to pick between:

chemistry (loved sciene in jc, but i dont know the standard of che in lc.. hard? )

history (also love history, but my handwriting is INCREDIBLY slow so i wouldnt be great at writing loads of essays in short amounts of time)

accounting (did business for jc, not my ideal cup of tea)

home ec (didnt do it for jc, dont think i would be able to bear it, but iv heard its easy-ish)

    pleeeeeeease help.. any recommendations.??

Well heres the only advice I can give (6th year student):

Chemistry - I really enjoyed doing this course, if you liked science, and the chemistry aspect of it then you should find this pretty easy and interesting. It has one of the highest A rates I believe, and I found it pretty easy going. I can't recall a vast amount of my JC, but I think the LC Chemistry course is more a continuation of what you did in the JC, you go into much more depth, and majority of what you learned for the JC will be amended. In essence I would say go for this if you liked Chemistry, as you'll probably find it enjoyable, ergo get a good grade.

History - This was the other subject on your list which I am doing, I liked some aspects of this course (European history + documents, which was America), Northern Ireland was suprisingly okay too. However I hate with a passion the Irish History with a passion, but I can live with that seeing as I enjoyed the other facets. If your handwriting is slow I think you would either have to simply increase it or drop History frankly - well thats my opinion. I can write pretty quickly but with the equivalent of 4 essays to be written in 2 hours 50 mins, its tough going.

As for the others you have listed, I don't do either of those however I have had to do Business since I couldn't get into economics with our timetable and I didnt find that too bad, boring but its simply learning off stuff. Anyway, if you can always try out some for the first couple of weeks and see how you like it, if not im sure they'll let you switch around.

Hey guys, I've been considering these subjects for the LC but I've been wondering about the merit of doing them under the following headings: Points (How easy it is to get nice points) Interestingness (Is the subject interesting?) Study (Is it one of those rote learning subjects or... the other kind)

    Here's what I was thinking...

    Biology
    Physics
    Chemistry
    Geography
    Music

Yeah, I'm a scientist, me. So what d'you think?

    The main 3 and then:
    Economics
    Spanish
    Chemistry
    Biology
    LCVP

Hey guys, I've been considering these subjects for the LC but I've been wondering about the merit of doing them under the following headings: Points (How easy it is to get nice points) Interestingness (Is the subject interesting?) Study (Is it one of those rote learning subjects or... the other kind)

    Biology
    Physics
    Chemistry
    Geography
    Music

Yeah, I'm a scientist, me. So what d'you think?
Okay, I did Physics and Music, so I can tell you about them. (I got A1s in both btw, so maybe this is a skewed opinion.)

Physics: for points-getting purposes... well, there are definitions to be learned off and experiments to be done. The questions are predictable enough though, I mean, there's only so much they can ask, so if you work on exam papers etc. a lot you'll get a good feel for what's required, IMO. The maths in it is not hard, as people make it out - just "put some things into this formula", etc. You need to know a couple of derivations but they're grand really.
Interestingness: this comes down a lot to personal choice. I personally think physics is interesting. Okay. I think the mechanics section of the course is pretty dull (experiments are things like watching blocks slide along wedges and measuring the time, etc.), and optics isn't too exciting either, but electricity and magnetism I really liked (making electricity by waving magnets about? surely magic!), and modern physics is pretty cool - x-rays, nuclear power, etc. The problem LC physics has is that there's only so much detail they can go into (generally not much), so you don't get to learn exactly why and how everything happens, which can be frustrating if you're really interested in it. Luckily there is the internet for this sort of thing.
Study: well, there are concepts to be learned. Definitions to be learned as well, but once you understand the concepts, the definitions come more easily. You're asked on experiments in the exam, and this just comes down to remembering how you did the experiment, so if you learn easily from having done, this should be handy. Ultimately, unlike say, Biology, physics comes down to basic enough maths problems, so you will have to remember formulae etc. This comes naturally from doing enough exam paper questions though. Like in maths, it's not a subject exactly where you sit down rewriting lists of words and key points over and over (there are some places where this comes up - ie, "how are x-rays formed"), and most of the study is just by practising exam questions.

Music: I'll try to be brief here: If you already play an instrument to a decent level, this should be grand. If you already know music theory to a decent level, this should be more than grand. Some of the stuff is boring, IMO - I HATE composition, but who can complain with listening to and analysing music! Points wise, as above: 50% is practical so if you're good at your instrument you should be grand. Studying can be a pain of sorts because it seems difficult to do - you have to listen to your set works over and over and get familiar with various aspects of them - the form, etc. There's also Irish music which can be a bit rote-learning - you've to learn a bunch of essays (like <1 page) on topics and be able to rewrite one in the exam. Workload is grand though if you already play an instrument!

Well I'll try to give you some information about Chemistry:

Points: It's pretty easy to get high points in this subject if you put in a bit of work, if you look at the results stats there is a high percentage of A1s and A2s. What I find good on the exam is that the questions are pretty short to answer, and you know exactly what you need to give in order to get the marks (for example if you have to explain something for 12 marks, its 4 points each 3 marks).

Interestingness: I think this is an extremely interesting course, possibly my favourite on the LC. You learn a good deal about atomic structure, why things react in the way they do, and the experiments are pretty easy to remember.

Study: Well as far as Chemistry goes there isn't a huge amount of stuff to learn off, you'll be doing certain things so often that you'll simply just remember them anyway. Yes, there's a few definitions, but these aren't long and usually easy to remember. My book is pretty good for revision, and by doing exam questions every so often you'll see which questions come up and how to answer them.

I wanted to do French, Accounting, music and pysics. The cutbacks mean that there is no pysics class so i settled on biology..but now they are going cutting either accounting and music or both which means i'm going to have to do business and home ec. I am more of a practical person and i was trying to stay on the more mathsy/practicall subjects but now i might have to do all hardcore learning!! I hate the recession...:(

Oh my god, the cutbacks are forcing a removal of physics and accounting? That's just awful.

And thanks for the tips, guys! Laters!

If you dident do business studies for the junior would it be easy to take up if you did it as a subject for the leaving??

It's meant to be grand, just might need to put a little extra effort in.

I did JC Business, but from what I can tell, it's only the very basics you're missing at LC without it, and if you really want to you'll pick that up easy enough. It's all explained as you go along anyway. The courses aren't the same at all really though. You should be fine :)

Having said that, all the people who came into the LC Business class in my year without JC business, are doing OL.

It's also important to consider what you'd think you'll be doing in third level. Although nothing really springs to mind that you won't be eligible for with those choices.

Thanks for all the information of physics, chemistry and biology. The only thing I'm worried about is honours maths. At JC, I'm about a high C in honours maths, hoping for a B in the examination itself. But in LC, well, I've heard the horror stories. I'm already planning to do pass Irish and I don't want to do pass maths aswell. Is LC maths really as difficult as they say or is it just alot of study (I can handle study)?

ok thanks. I borrowed a business book and papers and had a look through them and seemed to grasp some of the basics already so yeah i hope i should be fine...

still undecided what to do - I can do business or art but if I do art then I cant do LCVP

    Speaking from personal experience......
I found that the three science subjects complement eachother. Fairly large chunks of the course overlap, so GirlsAloud has probably lessened her workload.

Yep, I did all three for my LC. I would use the word "challenging" instead of "hard", but I was (still am) really big into my science.
I assume you are picking the 3 sciences for the same reason?
As long as you're willing to listen in class, do your homework, yada yada, theres no reason why you should find them too difficult.

Yeah. :D Wanna be some sort of scientist but I didn't think I was old enough to pick exactly what I wanted to do until i'm older so I just picked all 3.
    :D I hope I enjoy it.

Cutting open sheep hearts, and making things go bang. Sure whats not to enjoy. :pac:
I have found that they come in handy at college too, If you intend to go down the sciencey route.
The best of luck to ya.

French, Biology, Chemistry and Geography. I wanted to do Physics instead of Biology but my school axed it because of the recession - just my luck.

Just a warning about picking three science subjects...

A friend who was really interested in science ended up doing all three, wasnt her first choice to do them all but didnt mind too much. Having just finished 5th year she now HATES science, has completely overloaded on it and doesnt want to do anything science related in the future.

I do Biology, Chemistry and Accounting and find that having a break from science during the day makes a big difference, and I would like to study something connected with science after the LC...

Not putting a downer on it just another point of view! :)

Business is a very straightforward subject. It's boring but very manageable. I'd really recommend doing it! I don't do Geography but I've heard it's a lot more difficult than people say it is.

I've officially decided my subjects as French, Bio, Chem and Business.

Having second thoughts about the business though and wondering whether I should go for accounting? Got an A in JC business...always loved it. Once I understood the accounting bits I way preferred doing out an account as opposed to learning theory. I've heard that Business is pretty much a guaranteed A if you learn the stuff and I'm well able to learn off by heart and regurgitate it in an exam. I'm just wondering if I'd get bored. Accounting would be more interesting, but if I didn't get the accounting, and stuff didn't balance I'd probably get a tad stressed...any advice? Would be much appreciated.

Don't want to be distracting you from your studies now, but TY is unreal. Just make sure you do everything and get involved in as much as possible or it will be boring. I had such an unreal year!:D

I do French, Bio, Chem and Accounting and find it a pretty good mix of subjects. Biology is basically theory and having another subject like Business that is mainly theory might be a bit much, but it depends on the individual really. Personally I would rather do a more challenging subject like Accounting than sit bored listening to Business theory for two years!

But then I've always been more of a logic kinda girl... :D
