or soul....Not looking for James Brown or anything, more people/bands that are less mainstream and worth checking out.
Looking to beef up my music collection and I'm seriously lacking in this field and it's coming into summer, the season of funk in the sun

Try the Meters, Curtis Mayfield, or Isaac Hayes...

Graham Central Station? Never got around to them, but Larry Graham is big in bass circles for his slap pop technique. He played with Sly and the Family Stone aswell actually. Check them out for sure.

    Stanley Clarke?

    They're all mainstream though...

Oh well. I don't really know funk too good.

    Aren't they all the one?

If you haven't already heard the early red hot chilli peppers stuff you should give it a listen. Level 42 and Stevie Wonder (in particular 'songs in the key of life' by Stevie Wonder.

Not exactly. Either way, there are releases under each name so it's worth mentioning the three.

Infectious Grooves? Probably too far into funk metal for what you want.

Roy Ayers does some cool Jazzy funk. Well worth checking out.

Also, there's a compilation called the Funky 16 Corners. Which contains obscure, but really great funk songs from the 70's. I believe all the tracks on it were discovered by collectors in flea markets and crappy second hand record stores around America.

    Well worth a purchase.
