Gimme Shelter as an epic?! Absolute masterpiece but hardly an epic!

Most recent epic I've heard is Uniform by Bloc Party which is just over 5 minutes.

Again, song length is a factor but not a huge one, I think the main factor would be that of instrumentation, many epics begin quite softly and end in a huge crescendo followed by soft coda?

Adore pretty much all those tracks and Pacific State by 808 State would be on my list of "epic tracks".
    Id also have:
    New Order - Blue Monday
FSOL - Papua New Guinnea (original 12")
    Humanoid - Stakker Humanoid
and of course 808 State - Pacific State.

Those are the four that changed my life, on a musical level anyway :)

    Keep it hip hop!

Neil Young - Cortez the Killer, Powderfinger and Like a Hurricane already mentioned, but I'd also include Thrasher - was the first song that came to mind when I saw the thread title.

The Doors - The End definitely. And The Soft Parade

The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

    Dire Straits - Telegraph Road

Led Zep - Stairway of course.

    The Wildhearts - Sky babies

Any song clocking in at over 13.5 minutes with no fewer than 8 time signature changes, accounting for a journey through the stars with young alien invaders travelling across the universe to impregnate our wimmins and then go home again, while crescendoing on the same riff as it started, must surely epitomise the word "Epic"?

Tis easily fit to rival any Stairway to heaven, Freebird or Estranged.
Actually, has the latter been mentioned? It may not have been GnRs finest hour but damn, does it personify Axles quest for pomp.

The entire repertoire of the Beastie boys.

    No seriously,

    Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
November Rain - Guns n' Roses
Bat out of Hell - Meatloaf

They've all been mentioned already but they have the "epic" quality in spades.

    90's Oasis - Live Forever.

00's Interpol - Not Even Jail.

Does anybody else here want to shout 'DreamTheater, People! DreamTheater!!' or is it just me? Oh. Right then.

Seriously, how much more epic can you get, short of declaiming an Icelandic saga while burning and pillaging ? EDIT: OK, it's not quite Carmina Burana, which would be the mother of them all I suppose.

    ========

    Also:
I'm wondering on what basis people here call songs epic? I'm looking at some of the replies, and I think to myself, that's epic?

Hear hear. Let's not confuse epic and pompous.

CCR's version of Heard it through the Grapevine, definitely fits the epic tag, round 11minutes long, the best version IMO:)
