I have a vodafone 3G USB plugin, now I go to France a bit and have an Orange Card with SIM(3G) for using there, my new laptop has the newer type slot so the orange card won't fit.

Can I just put my french sim into the vodaphone 3g modem?

Modems usually like phone, locked to one operator.
My O2 modem would not work abroad. With local SIM it was "locked" and looked for an unlock code. With my O2 phone SIM it worked (same operator). Oddly my O2 phone SIM is not enabled for Data (on either device!) at home.
