New 24-hour air-ambulance service to be introduced
    09/03/2008 - 09:56:46
A new round the clock air-ambulance service is to be introduced.

In a deal with the Air Corps, the HSE will have use of four fully-equipped helicopters for inter-hospital transfer of patients.

The fleet will be officially launched later this month.

The army choppers can fly day or night and in most weather conditions.

Campaigners for a full helicopter ambulance service have said it will save lives.

    AND

In a rare good news story, the embattled HSE has entered into an agreement with the Air Corps to use a fleet of four newly-delivered AW-139 helicopters as air ambulances.

The military choppers, capable of flying day or night, and in most weather conditions, were bought for €48m for military purposes

Sure just paint them gloss white and put red crosses on them. The lads on Worldairpics are totally in agreement guys, So much for the army having a new level of air support. Dont get me wrong though im all for Life saving but come on, do it properly with a proper dedicated HEMS, let the Military guys do the Military flying in support of the Army.

I hate to p*ss on the picnic here but "inter-hospital transfer of patients" is a long long way from a real "24hr air ambulance service"

Given the state of the road infrastructure and the relative isolation of many parts of this small country in terms of the time it takes a casualty to reach decent A&E facilities, its an absolute disgrace that we don't have a proper emergency medical helicopter service, complete with medical staff etc.

Someone tried to set one up in the past but it fell apart trying to agree "protocols" between the medics and the great and mighty HSE, i.e. the private money is there to fund it, but the powers that be won't facilitate it.

Someone really needs to get a grip on this and knock a few heads...

Beside, Alouettes were transferring patients for decades...

Just spin on a quiet news day IMHO.
