    Fire brigades fighting Cork blaze
    Tuesday, 11 March 2008 22:59
Attempts by a Port of Cork tugboat to help extinguish a blaze on the naval base in Haulbowline in Cork Harbour are being hampered by bad weather.

Six units of the fire service are at the scene.

Nearby buildings, including the base HQ, have been evacuated.

The alarm was raised just before 9pm when the blaze broke out in block 4, the Quartermaster's building at the base. Originally built in the late 1800s, it was recently refurbished.

It is understood the roof of the four-storey building has collapsed.

The naval vessel the LE Orla is berthed nearby.

I went in with my brother and mother earlier to have a look, there were people everywhere watching from Cobh. I took some photographs but they're not very good I'm afraid... my fingers were too numb to hold the camera still for long!
