I'm buying at the moment. I'm looking for a nice car and I love a good discount. I've seen 2008 Audi A4 pre-owned with low miles for 27k. Was tempted but this is the old shape. If I decided to go for it how much more do you think I'd get off it? They are about 34k new but if I was buying it brand new I'd want a good discount because the new shape is much nicer and will devalue the old shape.

Any other suggestions for good, nearly new, pre-owned deals? Maybe a Jetta?
want my passat?http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Volkswagen/Passat/1.9-Tdi/1098695/ (offers considered)p.s anyone know how i could improve the ad to make the car sell faster?

    ...............

Thats a 45% drop in value in three years for a car that is supposed to hold its value well?

Welcome to the real world Brewster ;) . According the car sales guide the book value is about 15k for trade in.

Funny that, guess thats why its called a guide book, not always accurate! Was offered 16,700 on a trade in on an equivalent GT sport new golf... So there you have it, Im living in the real world, unfortunately cars arent selling and to sell at the moment you will have to give your car away. Im offering car less than a grand cheaper than the trade in price and still not a hint of a sale?? I never remember this happening before, it was always the other way around. Im sure most people would agree.

Indeed, have all of these people asking when things started to get bad ever sold a car before? It's almost as if they're reminiscing about good times that have now passed but as usual when reminiscing about times passed, they're probably remembering them as being much better than they actually were and remembering things that they had no hand, act or part in.
Most people trying to sell cars privately are dreamers when it comes to asking prices. A car that is honestly advertised and properly priced will sell to the first person who views it. If nobody is calling, the car is either priced too high, poorly advertised or is a niche model which would be better advertised in specialist magazines / websites. In most cases they're just overpriced, plain and simple.

    +1; I couldn't agree more.

A guy came on boards last year, complaining that he couldn't shift his car. It was a 318 coupe, with fairly low mileage. It was an English import (which wouldn't be my first preference, but I was genuinely interested in it). The car was way overpriced, so I let a couple of weeks go by to see if the price would drop. It didn't but I gave him a ring anyway and talked for a few mins about the car. Turned out to be a complete bull$hitter (carzone is full of them). I asked him would he even consider an offer (a realistic price for what the car is worth) and he declined. He even said he had 2 other people interested in the car (which I seriously doubt). In fact, the car was still for sale a couple of weeks later when I checked :D

Carzone- home of the daydreamers and the bull$hitters. :D

Lads to an extent I do agree with you, lots of messers out there. However, I defy anyone to tell me my car is over priced at 15,800 when offered trade in price of 16,700 (granted I did get last euro out of garagel!) on a similar new car...... I have a huge interest in motoring issues and consider myself quite well informed. If you know anyone looking for a good golf let me know! I havent even had a call. I genuinely dont think you realise how difficult things are. My friend runs a used car garage, hasnt shifted a car in 6 weeks??

Price/Value is dictated by the market.. If you haven't had a call in weeks your car is overpriced... Anything will sell at the right price...

Thats it, thats the problem, its the market! Its rank rotten bad at the moment for trying to sell 2nd hand cars.... Unless you are prepared to give your car away....!

Going to be selling the wife's car within the next month.
Its a 2006 Seat Ibiza 1.4 Sport (100bhp) 3dr, light blue metallic, excellent condition, with only 14000 kms on it.

Looking on carzone there is only 2 of the same car (the rest are all 1.2's) and the mileage is nearly double on the most expensive (12,995). Cheapest is 10000, again mileage is nearly double.

What would you say should I be pricing it at/expect to get for it?

New car on the way and I need to move on the existing one.

Any suggestions on how to do so in light of current market difficulties.

I have it up on Carzone but only one call from Carfinder (thanks but no thanks) There are too many Corollas up on there

    Up on adverts.ie but nothing

On way down to local shop tonight with a notice

Any other ways of getting it sold/noticed etc would be much appreciated

    One word: Price.

    Mate,

Things are bad out there. I am trying to sell my 05 golf for a price that is less than 1200 what garage quoted me for a trade in! Havent had a call. Unless you are prepared to knock thousands off price, you will struggle to sell. Sad reality unfortunately.

It's all down to price. Cheapest car will sell, nobody else gets any phonecalls.

I'd also agree that internet is best. A notice in the local shop won't do a hell of a lot of good compared to carzone, imho.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭no1beemerfan

Try ebay? you can put a reserve on it that would be rock bottom you'll except and some decent photos and see how it goes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭narommy

    Thanks

    Might try ebay

I would be in the bottom 20% of prices at the moment for Corollas for a carzone search for similar mileage, bodytype , year etc i was 24th out of 28 cars listed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,035 ✭✭✭✭-Chris-

Well then 4 cars need to be sold before you'll sell yours (all things being equal).

Not all true. My car is the cheapest '06 by far on carzone and nothing really...

Would you accept my point that if you were to increase the price you'd be even less likely to sell it?

Well obviously. Just checked there and theres another car just for sale slightly cheaper than my own now. Mine has been the cheapest for the last 2/3 months by quite a significant figure and all I've had is 2 calls.

    I've sold numerous of the same car in the past 2 years and there's just no bites at all this weather;
so I don't think it's all down to price imo.

I'm presuming this is your ad on carzone.ie

    http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=Car&carID=1191818&message=You%20searched%20for%3A%20Toyota%20Corolla%2C%20Hatchback%2C%20Engine%20Min%3A%201%2E4L%2C%20Engine%20Max%3A%201%2E4L%2C%20Oldest%3A%202005%2C%20Newest%3A%202005%2C%20County%3A%20Kildare%2C%20Private%20Sales%20Only%2E%20Your%20search%20returned%20one%20vehicle%2C%20which%20is%20shown%20below%2E&CFID=7589182&CFTOKEN=33062447

Yes it is hard to sell cars at the moment but there's still plenty being sold, if I was intending to look at it the following would put your car toward the bottom of my list...
    No internal photos.
No mention of service history, if there is one mentioning it will help it sell.
Photos are fairly crap angles, you should take about 10 good photos from varying angles including inside boot, internal and engine shots.

Lads, I hear what your saying but not sure you realise how bad it is.. Would you say a 2005 VW Golf Sportsline TDI 3dr, one owner- which cost me 28,500 euro new and now cant be sold for 15,800 is way over priced? The car has 40k miles, absolute mint condition. The new equivalent is approx 27k after VRT reduction in July. Maybe im missing something, but that car is not way over priced IMHO! Thats a 45% drop in value in three years for a car that is supposed to hold its value well?

It's simple sums. Most people spending that kind of money on a car will buy from a dealer because they want a warranty and aftersales service. The kind of person who would be interested in your car in a private sale will be looking for rock bottom prices. Your competition therefore comes from UK imports which offer the best value to someone who knows they're getting no warranty or aftersales. I'm assuming you're talking about a MKV and the 2.0TDI, with a bit of negotiation, something similar could probably be landed here for a shade over €8k and VRT will add another €4k giving a total of €12k.
If you've already bought a new car, then you need to sell. You can clutch at straws like VW's legendary resale all you want but if you don't sell now even if you're not totally happy with the price, you'll get even less come the new year and may be incurring interest penalties either on this or the new car.

The trade in price will also include some of the dealer margin on the list price of the new car. The dealer will have a price that they will sell a new car at which will be an x% discount off the list price, they add this discount to the trade value of your car to in effect boost the apparent trade in price they're offering you. Why didn't you take this trade in offer?

The real world is a place where any item is worth as much as a potential buyer is willing to pay for it. Even in the good times 50% depreciation over 3 years was par for the course.
When you say you never remember this happening before, how many cars have you sold in the past?

    Hi Guys,

Giving private selling a go for the first time and looking for tips! Its a blue 00 Audi A6, only 50k on the clock as its mainly a weekend car due to no parking at work! Its in good condition, had a service last month and nct'd to may 2010. Log books etc to support mileage. Looking for about 6200 for it. On carzone the average price is 7040 and they have more mileage. Any hints and tips? Cars seem to be moving at a slow pace at the moment. How do you find private sales/what do you love hate about them or how would you go about yours? Cheers!

Sorry i didn't see this thread before posting before!

+1, even before the price crash in the second hand market this was a very optimistic price. 50% in 3 years is about std, this car is 4 months from being 4 years old. Would say the car is worth 13k tops in the current market. Put it this way, it isn't ever going to be worth 15k again.
