Thanks lads. The evaluation of used yokes is not really my forte so I do appreciate your opinions.

I'm gonna have to try sell it privately because on a trade in he'll end up worse off.

the "book value" at trade in for this model is €5,550 so thats a figure you could work off I suppose

Looks like the car has no service history or you havn't mentioned it in your advert. Alot of people are especially cautious of purchasing ex UK cars with no record of mileage. If you had a HPI check from when you purchased the vehicle this would also help with selling it.

I said it before and I will say it again get rid of those italic plates, it will put more people off than it will interest. Alternatively blank the plates out but again this will put off potential purchasers.

first thing you need to do is to get it as much exposure as possible.

the following websites do free ads for selling your car, so stick it on them asap so as many people see it as possible.

    http://www.cbg.ie/
    http://www.carsireland.ie/
    http://www.funkymotors.ie/

I got the best response from CBG when I sold my own car, but they're all worth a go.

Just wanted to say thanks a mill
Sold the jeep this eve - got a lot more than the breakers yard had offered for it.

Still trying to sell my '99 Civic. Have it parked on the roadside here at home. Also, I got a call today from CBG saying they are running a special offer - 10weeks in the 'Deal of the week' section of the CBG magazine, 10 weeks online on CBG and 3 other top websites incl. loadsacars.ie. They offered me this for €80. Any advice. Is it worth it?

Heres me ad on CBG http://www.cbg.ie/Car_Detail.aspx?ID=2049605
    and on Adverts.ie: http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=55532&cat=2

why do you have the ad posted twice on CBG.ie the ad you posted has the car at €3,500 and the second CBG.ie ad without the pic has the price at €3,100.

While it's obviously a saloon in the picture , the 2nd ad describes it as a hatchback. When you sort Civics by price both ads appear next to each other and people will easily see the same contact number and may think theres something fairly suss going on.

I sold my car recently cos I got a company car with a new job. I had it on both cbg and carsireland but I got more enquires through carsireland. I had it parked on a grassy area at the entrance to the estate with the stickers which they give you on both rear windows. Its a good system cos all a buyer has to do is look up the number plate on their website and it gives them all the details.

Yeah folks, know how you all feel. When did this not selling of cars start? I started to sell my car in June admittedly on the pricey side but now I cant give away my 05 VW TDI Sportsline Golf. Yes a golf, always a popular car... !! Is it simply down to the economy slowing down? When did things get bad?

I was trying to sell mine for a long time and eventually had to trade in against the one i was buying.

Bought the car last year for 14k
Got a trade in of 7.5k for it

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Brewster

Yeah thats a serious hit ok! I want to sell mine and go to the Uk but dont think thats going to happen for the moment!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

Seems to have really kicked in over the summer. Combination of the downturn, changes in tax, and also the influx of much cheaper much higher spec'd UK cars. Cars IMO are very over priced in Ireland, especially used cars. People are looking for crazy money for high mileage used cars especially for certain brands. No point in paying 70-80% the cost of a new car for something with 50k+ or even 100k on it, just because its newish, or paying a high premium for diesel when most people just don't do the mileage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Brewster

Yeah I guess so. Mines a golf with only 40k miles on it and I thought it would shift no bother. How wrong was I, I thought someone would love a low mileage diesel golf. Then again with diesel prices up, youd want to be doing the mileage to justify it. Still though I agree cars are way over priced in this country. The Uk imports are going to effect things ok over next while.

Indeed, have all of these people asking when things started to get bad ever sold a car before? It's almost as if they're reminiscing about good times that have now passed but as usual when reminiscing about times passed, they're probably remembering them as being much better than they actually were and remembering things that they had no hand, act or part in.
Most people trying to sell cars privately are dreamers when it comes to asking prices. A car that is honestly advertised and properly priced will sell to the first person who views it. If nobody is calling, the car is either priced too high, poorly advertised or is a niche model which would be better advertised in specialist magazines / websites. In most cases they're just overpriced, plain and simple.

Lads, I hear what your saying but not sure you realise how bad it is.. Would you say a 2005 VW Golf Sportsline TDI 3dr, one owner- which cost me 28,500 euro new and now cant be sold for 15,800 is way over priced? The car has 40k miles, absolute mint condition. The new equivalent is approx 27k after VRT reduction in July. Maybe im missing something, but that car is not way over priced IMHO! Thats a 45% drop in value in three years for a car that is supposed to hold its value well?

I'm buying at the moment. I'm looking for a nice car and I love a good discount. I've seen 2008 Audi A4 pre-owned with low miles for 27k. Was tempted but this is the old shape. If I decided to go for it how much more do you think I'd get off it? They are about 34k new but if I was buying it brand new I'd want a good discount because the new shape is much nicer and will devalue the old shape.

Any other suggestions for good, nearly new, pre-owned deals? Maybe a Jetta?
