I went into Reads to pick up a magazine today and was shocked to see that Reads have stopped giving their 10% off all magazines.

Is it any coincidence though? They were taken over by Easons there last year, Easons have since moved out of their Nassau St premises, and now that there is no competition for Reads they charge the same price as Easons on O'Connell St!

Good to see competition is alive and well!

You know that Easons bought them yet you still give out that they are not competing? What sort of stupid company would compete with itself to reduce prices?

Ì know what way you said it but why even mention anything about competition. If it was two seperate shops on the same street mirroring each others prices then maybe.

Easons virtually operates as a monopoly on the importing of magazines into the Republic of Ireland, as the main wholesaler/distributor to most shops.
They have taken complete advantage of this situation, and have applied massive mark-up's IMO.
However, go to Easons in Newry, and the normal GBP prices apply. Why? Competition from a different distributor + WH Smyth.
On principle, I never but magazines in Easons, but I used to use Reads.
I could accept the GBP/EURO exchange rate difference, plus the VAT difference, but the additional Easons mark-up is too much for me.
It's a pity that most of the UK magazines charge so much to deliver directly to homes in Ireland.
    Rant over!

Easons bought Reads in Nov 2005.

Eason in Newry sell at UK prices because it is in the UK!!!!!!!!!

Almost all shops charge the same prices for the magazines. They are slightly more expensive than the UK after VAT due to the high cost of doing business in ROI. The population density of ROI is also very low and this leads to higher distribution costs.

The additional waste disposal costs also lead to higher costs

By the way, WH Smith don't distribute in NI, most news in NI is distributed by Eason Menzie News Distribution

Reads was special before they were taken over by Easons.

Anyone remember those ads they had about being "30% cheaper than Easons"? I'd say they had to pulp them fairly quickly after they were taken over.

Nothing stopping anyone from ordering a magazine subscription on line from the UK. The days of the high street shops are coming to an end. Easons will still have its use, ie like the clothes shops in Dublin where you try your size before you order elsewhere on line. With Easons and all these other expensive book shops you can flick through and choose your mags before you order on line.

Reads was a dirty, smelly horrible little shop before Easons took over.

They sold a very limited selection of books which they were able to sell cheap. The stationery was also inferior brands and quality to the stuff sold in Easons.

Have to disagree with you there. IMO Reads was never dirty or smelly. It was always very busy, as it offered better value compared to Easons. It's a shame they sold out to Easons, as we are now stuck with the monopoly, who straight away have increased the prices.
And while they did sell a limited selection of books, their prices were always much better than Easons, hence why so many people used them.
Can't comment on the stationary brands. Bought a couple of things there over the years, and never noticed anything wrong with them. But might be different for specialist art supplies etc. But yet again, they were certainly a lot cheaper then Easons.

In the days before cheap inkjet printers and ink you couldn't beet them for photocopying.
