i'll do a boards bbq, i am a professional at them now.

A boards DnD bbq sounds like a good idea.:D

Don't want to start another thread for this but could anyone help me out with somewhere around the town I could get my laptop fixed?

The port for the charger seems to have come loose and when I plug it in the charger isn't connecting. Was gonna bring it back to the Sony shop but they will probably send it away and it will be missing for weeks...so if anyone knows anywhere that could do it I would appreciate it.

DS Computers are in Graigcullen, opposite Domino's, beside the Weepin' Tiger.
There's another place on Dublin St. but I don't know the name of it. Its opposite The Golden Grill I think and then there's a guy I know that runs his own business called Rockfield IT solutions (IIRC) that could also sort you out. I have his number if you want it.

Unlikely to be fixed by your average IT repair guy unless they have decent advanced knowledge and the right equipment. Its a common problem but requires a good bit of work to fix. I only know of my own business and a place in Kilkenny that do this kinda work, both serving the south east. The place in KK does more specialised stuff then we can offer at the moment like screen repairs.

Thanks for all the help but.......turns out it was just the charger. Don't know if I feel stupid or bad about blatantly lying to the guy in the shop yesterday when I told him " I could have sworn the light on it was on last time I used it."

According to him the charger is no longer being made so might need a new laptop after all.

have you tried our good friend ebay?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭shenanigans1982

Just had a quick look now....a couple on there for bout 20 pound from the uk...which is a lot cheaper than the 160 euro the guy in the shop said it would cost.

Or I could go for the 99 pence one from Hong Kong.

try and get the offical ones, not the OEM, as the OEM's can sometimes only have a lifetime of a month or two

What do you mean? OEM isnt any better/worse.. The cheaper ones are usually copies which can sometimes be poorer quality.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭aynon

i mean non-oem, the ones from hong kong are usually fakes, trust me i used to all my families laptops, and the charger usually only works if its offical. only had one not offical. 5-6 were complete and utter plonk.

Ah right. When you said OEM I assumed you meant the original was ****e and go with fakes. In hardware terms, the only difference really is lack of intructions - its just for IT admins and PC builders who dont need the extra stuff.

think i'll use ubuntu, or kubuntu, but windows 7 is cool although i hear that it cant have a second os running alongside it. knoppix is looking like a runner.

...the only thing that was missing!!!

I love it when the IT guy says that...makes me feel like I'm in the hands of a real professional.

And if that fails, don't forget to just plug it out!

People spend years in college learning how to do that...amazing!:p
